Adwoa Safo Faces Disciplinary Probe within NPP

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) finds itself navigating internal strife as key figures voice concerns over the treatment of former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament, Sarah Adwoa Safo. Davis Ansah Opoku, the Member of Parliament for Mpraeso Constituency, has publicly questioned the party's leadership regarding its decision to refer Adwoa Safo to the National Disciplinary Committee.

This referral stems from Adwoa Safo's recent media appearances where she criticized a party-led committee, chaired by former Speaker of Parliament Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye, dismissing its report as 'bogus.' In response, Davis Ansah Opoku took to Facebook on March 20, 2025, to express his views, highlighting what he perceives as unfair criticism directed at Adwoa Safo in the past, particularly during her personal difficulties.

Opoku's post emphasized the need for sensitivity and understanding within the party. He recounted instances where he and others harshly judged Adwoa Safo, later regretting their actions upon learning the full extent of her challenges as a mother and individual. He argued that Adwoa Safo's decision to voice her concerns publicly shouldn't warrant punishment, especially when others within the party have spoken freely without facing similar repercussions.

"In the 8th Parliament, no MP endured more criticism than you, Adwoa," Opoku stated in his Facebook post. "Many of us, myself included, judged you harshly... But today, with reflection, I say we were wrong." The Mpraeso MP urged the party leadership to view Adwoa Safo's remarks as a call for engagement rather than an opportunity for retribution. He stressed the importance of addressing her distrust of Professor Oquaye's committee and providing a platform for her to voice her concerns within the party family.

The NPP's decision to refer Adwoa Safo to the National Disciplinary Committee is rooted in what the party considers anti-party conduct. A statement issued by the General Secretary on March 20, 2025, asserts that Adwoa Safo's media comments, particularly on Joy News' 'Pulse' show, contravene directives instructing party members to refrain from discussing issues that create disaffection within the party. The statement also highlighted her former positions as a Member of Parliament, Deputy Majority Leader, and Minister of State, emphasizing the expectation that she should set a good example by adhering to the principles of discipline, loyalty, and unity.

"Her failure to do so not only reflect poorly on her but also contravenes Article 3(5) of the party's constitution," the statement read. The party believes that Adwoa Safo's actions undermine efforts to rebuild and move forward.

Adwoa Safo, meanwhile, has embarked on a media tour to address what she describes as long-endured unfair treatment. She maintains that she has previously apologized to the party and her constituency for her absence and family issues. She has also made claims regarding the vote to remove Prof. Mike Oquaye as Speaker of Parliament. In an interview on Movement Radio/TV, she claimed that the vote to remove Prof. Oquaye was overwhelmingly against him to the point where revealing the figures could cause national chaos. She also defended Carlos Ahenkorah's actions of snatching ballot papers, implying it was due to the shocking scale of votes against Oquaye.

As the NPP grapples with these internal conflicts, the situation underscores the challenges of maintaining unity and addressing grievances within a political party. The outcome of Adwoa Safo's referral to the National Disciplinary Committee and the party's response to Davis Ansah Opoku's concerns will likely have significant implications for the NPP's future cohesion and public image. It remains to be seen how the party will navigate these complex issues and reconcile differing viewpoints among its members.
