Harry Potter HBO Series Builds Momentum Ahead of Late-2026 Premiere
HBO's highly anticipated 'Harry Potter' series is set to premiere on Christmas Day, with a star-studded cast and ambitious plans to adapt all seven novels. Meanwhile, Warner Bros. will open the UK's largest Harry Potter store in November, though the adaptation also faces ongoing discussion regarding creator J.K. Rowling's gender views.
The new Harry Potter television series is moving closer to its HBO debut, with Warner Bros. Discovery preparing a new version of J.K. Rowling's seven-book story for television.
The series is expected to premiere in late 2026, although a specific premiere date has not been firmly confirmed. The production is being led by showrunner Francesca Gardiner, with Mark Mylod among the directors.
The new cast includes Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. John Lithgow will play Albus Dumbledore, while Paapa Essiedu takes on Severus Snape and Nick Frost plays Rubeus Hagrid.
The project is intended to give each of Rowling's seven novels a fuller television adaptation than was possible in the original eight-film series.
New London store adds to Potter push
Warner Bros. is also expanding the franchise's retail presence in London.
An official Harry Potter flagship storeis scheduled to open on Oxford Street in autumn 2026. The two-floor shop will cover 21,000 square feet and occupy a site at The Ribbon development at 134–140 Oxford Street.
The store is being designed as an immersive Harry Potter experience, with interiors inspired by locations from the books and films, alongside interactive features, photo opportunities and exclusive merchandise.
The official Oxford Street store page currently lists the opening as autumn 2026.
The new shop will become London's second official Harry Potter retail destination after the store at King's Cross.
Rowling controversy remains part of the discussion
The television adaptation is also arriving while J.K. Rowling's views on gender and transgender rights remain a source of controversy.
Some members of the cast have publicly distanced themselves from Rowling's views while expressing affection for the books and the fictional world.
The issue has therefore remained part of the conversation around the new series, even as production moves ahead.
For Warner Bros., the HBO adaptation represents another major attempt to extend one of its most valuable franchises. The immediate focus, however, is on completing the series and preparing it for its late-2026 launch.
