Wild Crossover Alert! Quentin Tarantino's Lost 'Kill Bill' Chapter Resurrected by Fortnite!

Director Quentin Tarantino is finally seeing a two-decade-old dream come true with the release of the “Kill Bill” chapter known as “Yuki’s Revenge.” This animated short will debut in Fortnite and concurrently head to the big screen as an exclusive limited theatrical run, integrated into “Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair.” Tarantino’s “The Lost Chapter: Yuki’s Revenge” features Uma Thurman reprising her iconic role as The Bride in an eight-minute narrative.

Tarantino and Thurman collaborated closely with Epic Games, leveraging their Unreal Engine and advanced motion capture technology to seamlessly transfer Thurman’s performance into the gaming platform. At a special launch event held at his Vista Theater in Los Angeles, Tarantino elaborated on how Fortnite and Epic Games proved to be the ideal partners for “The Lost Chapter: Yuki’s Revenge.” He recounted his initial expectation of discussing character licensing, only to be presented with the proposal to create new, original content between eight and twelve minutes long that would feature his iconic characters within their platform.

It turned out Tarantino possessed precisely such content: an entire chapter from the original first draft of “Kill Bill” that had never even progressed to second drafts. This “lost chapter” detailed Gogo (played by Chiaki Kuriyama in the original film) having a twin sister who, feeling unwell, left the House of Blue Leaves early. Tarantino explained that this chapter was excluded from the final film due to pacing concerns, being deemed “too crazy, too violent, and just too much action.” He expressed his surprise at the opportunity to realize this material after so long, stating, “When I wrote the first draft of the script, there was a lost chapter that, frankly, I just didn’t think we could pull off. And Yuki has been a figment of my imagination for over 20 years.”

Uma Thurman joined Tarantino at the event, explaining how motion capture technology was instrumental in bringing The Bride to Fortnite. She highlighted how Unreal Engine’s real-time rendering capabilities allowed for testing various poses and expressions to determine what translated best. For the voiceover, facial data from the actors aided the animation process. Thurman found the experience novel and cool, noting, “It’s so novel to wear the camera on your head, but I completely forgot about it; just started to live in the moments of the scenes we were doing.” She also expressed her enthusiasm for this new method of storytelling, finding it “moving” and “great,” believing it’s “something meant to be” and an excellent way to reach a “new audience for the movie.”

Lionsgate will open Tarantino’s “The Whole Bloody Affair,” a comprehensive four-hour cut (281 minutes with a 15-minute intermission) that merges “Kill Bill Vol. 1” and “Kill Bill Vol. 2” into a single feature, in theaters on December 5. The film follows Thurman as The Bride, left for dead after an ambush by her former boss and lover, Bill, who shoots her in the head and steals her unborn child. Her quest for vengeance leads her to hunt down the four remaining members of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad before confronting Bill himself. “The Whole Bloody Affair” also stars Lucy Liu, Vivica A. Fox, Michael Madsen, Daryl Hannah, Gordon Liu, Michael Parks, and David Carradine as Bill. Produced by Lawrence Bender, it was written and directed by Tarantino, based on The Bride character created by Q&U (Quentin and Uma). Tarantino hopes this collaboration will ensure that “both the ‘Kill Bill’ fan and the Fortnite fan to be totally effing happy about this collaboration.”
