Why is the M60 still closed after 24 hours?

Published 4 days ago4 minute read

Drivers have faced a full 24 hours of disruption after a nine-vehicle pile-up on the M60.

A large stretch of the motorway has been closed in both directions following a huge crash at 11.26am on Monday morning (July 7).

Police, paramedics and firefighters all raced out to the scene, near junction 27 at Portwood, in Stockport.

Many drivers were held on the motorway for much of the afternoon.

Nine people were checked at the scene by emergency services, with three taken to Stepping Hill Hospital for treatment to minor injuries.

Thankfully, no serious injuries were reported following the crash.

Although the collision took place 24 hours ago, drivers are still unable to use the M60 in either direction between junctions 25 at Bredbury and one at the Stockport Pyramid.

National Highways has also warned motorists that the closure is set to continue for a while longer, with work due to take place 'throughout the day'.

Monday's crash left a scene of destruction on the M60 in Stockport.

Greater Manchester Police says three lorries, two vans and four cars were all involved in the collision.

According to National Highways, one lorry crossed through the central reservation barrier and struck several lampposts in the process.

As a result, both sides of the motorway had to be closed off.

Meanwhile, another of the lorries shed its load of beer barrels onto the road, with images from the scene showing both kegs and booze spilling out on the road.

The crash also led to several fuel tanks being ruptured, causing a large amount of diesel to spill across the carriageway in both directions, which all needs to be cleared up.

In the first few hours following the crash, responders were focused on supporting the people involved and recovering the vehicles from the scene.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service says it was in attendance for three hours, with crews from across Greater Manchester working to 'make three cars safe' at the scene, while North West Ambulance Service tended to casualties before taking three to hospital.

Traffic officers and maintenance contractors also attended the scene alongside emergency services.

National Highways says recovery work from the collision is now complete and all road users within the closure have been released.

However, emergency resurfacing work remains ongoing at the scene, with efforts to repair the destruction caused by yesterday's crash still taking place.

In a post on X earlier today, National Highways said: "Contractors will be working throughout the day to complete the repairs to reopen the road."

An update on the National Highways website adds: "We apologise for the inconvenience caused whilst clean up and repair works take place and we thank you for your patience if impacted. There are delays of up to 60 minutes on all approaches at this stage.

"If this incident impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey."

Diversions are in place in both directions, using the A560 and A5145.

"Emergency services attended and fortunately, no one was seriously injured. Three HGVs, two vans and four cars were involved in the collision. Three people were taken to hospital to be treated for minor injuries as a precaution.
