Another overnight warning issued after M60 crash shuts motorway for 30 HOURS
Another travel warning has been issued overnight after a major crash on the M60 shut the motorway for 30 hours.
Emergency services first descended on the motorway at junction 27 in Portwood, Stockport, at 11.26am yesterday (July 7). Three lorries, two vans and four cars were all involved in a major crash - with one HGV smashing through the central reservation and another shedding beer barrels.
Dramatic pictures and videos showed the scale of the damage, with debris and oil strewn over the road, prompting a full closure to be put in place in both directions.
It was later confirmed that no serious injuries were reported. Three people were taken to Stepping Hill Hospital as a precaution for minor injuries.
A full closure remained in place for 26 hours, until around 1.45pm on Tuesday when highways officers were finally able to reopen the anticlockwise carriageway, with one lane closed due to barrier damage. Then after around 30 hours, the clockwise carriageway fully reopened to traffic.
Details surrounding the 'complex' operation of carriageway resurfacing and repair work has also been revealed by National Highways, who said a large section of central reservation barrier needed to be replaced and damaged caused to a bridge parapet repaired.
The carriageways in both directions also needed resurfacing following a diesel spillage, and lampposts damaged in the collision also had to be isolated from the electricity supply and removed.

In a new update, another overnight warning into Wednesday (July 9) has been issued to motorists for further works to be carried out on the M60. Two lanes will be shut in both directions for repairs to be undertaken, from 9.30pm onwards.
An update issued by National Highways read: "Motorists are advised that overnight tonight from 9.30pm further repairs will be undertaken to complete the works to the central barrier, necessitating the closure of lanes 2 and 3 in both directions between junctions 1 (Stockport) and 27 (Bredbury)."
A spokesperson for the agency said: "Following extensive and significant repairs two lanes of the M60 (2 of 3) have now reopened anticlockwise following yesterday’s incident on the M60 at Stockport.
"A lengthy clear-up and repair operation has continued overnight and today with National Highways working hard to reopen the motorway in both directions.

"Significant damage was caused in the collision and complex infrastructure repairs have been required, including replacing a large section of central reservation barrier and undertaking repairs to a damaged bridge parapet. Both carriageways needed resurfacing following a large diesel spillage across all lanes. Lampposts damaged in the collision also needed to be isolated from the electricity supply and removed.
"As these repairs are steadily completed it has been possible to reopen two lanes of the M60 anticlockwise between Junction 1 (Stockport) and Junction 25 (Bredbury). Lane 3 of 3 will remain closed for safety reasons as further repairs continue.
"It is hoped the M60 clockwise will be reopened later this afternoon or early evening, and diversions remain in place."
Greater Manchester Police are now appealing for dashcam footage and witness accounts of the incident, which was first reported at around 11.26am on Monday (July 7).
