Weekend weather forecast: Long Island thunderstorms ahead - Newsday

Published 1 week ago3 minute read

Parts of Long Island could see severe weather as showers move in Saturday night and intense thunderstorms are forecast on Sunday afternoon, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Bryan Ramsey.

Saturday begins sunny with relatively low humidity and a high temperature in the lower 80s. On Saturday evening, "isolated and more spotty showers" will move in and are expected later in the night, Ramsey said.

"If you were to walk outside you’ll probably see it’s nice and sunny, at least to start. But ... rain chances are going to increase later this evening into tonight," he said, adding the rain will be "very isolated stuff this afternoon and evening, mainly in the later evening."

Sunday’s high temperature will be around 90 degrees and humidity will make it feel as hot as 96 on parts of Long Island. The weather service has issued a "marginal" severe weather warning for storms after 2 p.m. on Sunday, according to Ramsey.

The severe weather could bring heavy rainfall, a risk of flooding, damaging rain and large hail, the meteorologist told Newsday. Most of those severe weather conditions would primarily affect the North Shore, he said.

“[We are] not expecting widespread issues for flash flooding, but an isolated occurrence of that can’t be ruled out in any of the thunderstorms," Ramsey said. "The primary risk for that is going to be damaging winds with wind gusts in excess of 58 miles an hour."

Ramsey expects any flooding to be minor, such as "ponding on the roadways." The warning is "really just for the wind, maybe an isolated occurrence of large hail, but that will be about it," he said. There is no tornado risk, he added.

"More than likely, we’ll just get some nice moderate rainfall and then the occasional heavy downpour may lead to minor nuisance flooding," he said. "That will be really through tomorrow."

Conditions are forecast to clear on Monday, when it’s expected to be sunny with a high in the mid-80s.

"After that front passes, we’re drying out," he said, through at least the middle of the week.
