We feel no sympathy for Hawa Koomson after Ablekuma North incident - Abraham Koomson
Hawa Koomson was pushed to the ground
Secretary-General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has stated that he feels no sympathy for former Awutu Senya East MP, Mavis Hawa Koomson, following her assault during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun in the Greater Accra Region.
While condemning the violent disturbances that disrupted voting across 19 polling stations, Koomson was direct in his critique of the former fisheries minister’s conduct.
“Why would anyone go to a polling station with pepper spray? What were you expecting to happen there?” he asked.
“We’ve seen her role in previous incidents. Has she ever shown remorse for those actions?”
His comments referenced the controversial 2020 voter registration incident, in which Hawa Koomson admitted to firing a gun at a registration center, claiming self-defense.
The incident attracted widespread criticism and remains a contentious issue in public discourse.
During the July 2025 rerun, tensions escalated at several polling centers in Ablekuma North.
Eyewitnesses reported that a group of men arrived at the St. Peter’s Methodist Church polling station in a pickup truck and on motorbikes, triggering panic among voters and electoral officials.
Despite a notable police presence, impersonation, vote-buying, and acts of violence were recorded. Viral footage from the scene showed Hawa Koomson deploying pepper spray during a scuffle before being overpowered by an irate crowd.
Reacting to the video, Koomson reiterated his stance against electoral violence but emphasized that those who once condoned or benefited from such behavior must be held accountable.
“We should not condone violence under any circumstances,” he stated.
“But those who have previously promoted or benefited from such acts must reflect on their own actions. Maybe this is a moment of reckoning,” he added.
Abraham Koomson made these remarks on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu programme on Saturday, July 12, 2025.
