Warner Bros. Discovery's Streaming Chaos: Subscribers Forced to Start Over

Discovery+ subscribers in Canada are facing a significant disruption as they are being compelled to abandon their existing accounts and manually transition to a new platform. Ahead of the scheduled February 17, 2026, shutdown of Warner Bros. Discovery's version of the service, Rogers has introduced a new Discovery+ platform that lacks automatic account migration. This means current users must undertake a manual reset, effectively wiping out all payment information, personal profiles, watch history, and individual settings. What should ideally be a smooth transition has instead become a frustrating process of rebuilding for long-term subscribers who have invested time and loyalty into the service.
The lack of automatic account transfer means that consumers are burdened with the task of recovering and re-establishing their viewing preferences. Discovery+'s customer support pages explicitly state that critical data, including payment details, user profiles, and watch history, will not be moved to the new Discovery+ platform. Personal settings, such as watchlists and favorite shows, will also not be preserved, requiring users to manually re-add content to their queues to avoid missing episodes of popular shows like Sister Wives, Swamp People, and Home Town. This places the onus entirely on the users, a situation that may lead some to abandon the service altogether due to the inconvenience.
This kind of user adaptation is not unprecedented in the streaming landscape, with similar migration challenges encountered during past transitions, such as HBO GO to HBO Max, and the integration of Hulu into Disney+. However, in the case of Discovery+ in Canada, the shift to new management under Rogers may result in less direct assistance for users navigating these changes.
Further complicating the transition is the new Discovery+ app's limited device compatibility. While it will continue to host content from familiar TV brands like Animal Planet and Discovery Turbo, the app will only be available on specific formats: Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Samsung TV, Android TV, web browsers, mobile devices, and tablets. Notably, several common devices, including Roku TV, LG Smart TVs, Amazon Fire Tablets, Chromecast, and Xbox, will not support the new app, forcing some users to acquire new hardware or lose access to the service.
This strategic move by Warner Bros. Discovery aligns with its broader corporate strategy, which increasingly favors partnerships and licensing deals over the financial and operational complexities of running every platform independently. This approach mirrors their recent decision to license major HBO and Warner Bros. Discovery content to Netflix. While certain HBO and Warner Bros. Discovery titles are moving to Netflix, reality television content will likely remain on HBO Max. In the American market, there is significant overlap in reality television titles offered on both Discovery+ and HBO Max, with the latter historically providing the added benefit of major HBO content. Ultimately, what is presented as a mere platform transition highlights how easily loyal streaming audiences are expected to sacrifice continuity and convenience for broader corporate strategic objectives.
