Vinicius Jr at Centre of Racism Storm Following Benfica Showdown

Real Madrid claimed a crucial 1-0 first-leg advantage over Benfica in their Champions League play-off clash at the Estadio da Luz, thanks to a decisive strike from Vinícius Júnior.

However, the match was overshadowed by an alleged racism incident that led to the activation of anti-racism protocols and a lengthy stoppage in play.

Madrid controlled much of the first half, creating multiple opportunities, though Kylian Mbappé failed to convert his chances.

The breakthrough came in the 50th minute when Mbappé fed Vinícius on the left flank.

The Brazilian cut inside and curled a superb right-footed shot into the top corner, leaving Benfica goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin with no chance.

Tensions escalated immediately after the goal.

Vinícius celebrated near the corner flag in front of Benfica supporters, prompting a hostile reaction from sections of the crowd.

Objects were reportedly thrown onto the pitch, and the forward received a yellow card for excessive celebration.

The situation intensified when Vinícius approached referee François Letexier, appearing to report a racist remark allegedly made by Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni.

According to reports, the club’s anti-racism protocol was activated, and play was halted for around ten minutes.

Media accounts claimed Prestianni was accused of using a racist slur, though both players later resumed the match.

After the disruption, Benfica struggled to create clear chances against Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, while Madrid calmly managed possession to protect their narrow lead.

Prestianni was substituted in the 81st minute for Dodi Lukebakio.

Late drama followed as Madrid Coach José Mourinho was shown a second yellow card for dissent and sent off, watching the closing moments from the stands.

The 1-0 victory gives Real Madrid a slender but valuable advantage heading into the second leg, though the alleged racist incident remains a major talking point ahead of the return fixture.
