Venice Film Festival Crowns Legend Ellen Burstyn with Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement!

Veteran actress Ellen Burstyn, celebrated for her iconic roles in films such as “The Last Picture Show,” “The Exorcist,” and “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore,” is set to receive the prestigious Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival. The announcement was made by the festival on Tuesday.

Alberto Barbera, the festival’s artistic director, lauded Burstyn as “an actress of rare intensity and truth,” highlighting her remarkable ability to infuse “depth and complexity to unforgettable female characters embodying the contradictions and transformations in the contemporary woman.” Barbera further elaborated on Burstyn’s illustrious career, noting her initial revelation in Peter Bogdanovich’s “The Last Picture Show,” which vividly depicted the decline of small-town America. Her rise to global stardom was cemented by the immense success of William Friedkin’s horror masterpiece, “The Exorcist.” Burstyn later earned an Oscar for Best Actress for her performance in Martin Scorsese’s “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore,” a film Barbera described as a manifesto about women asserting their identity and freedom.

Her extensive filmography showcases collaborations with some of the most influential directors of her era. These include Alain Resnais in “Providence,” Paul Schrader in “Hardcore,” Bob Rafelson in “The King of Marvin Gardens,” Paul Mazursky in “Alex in Wonderland” and “Harry and Tonto,” Darren Aronofsky in “Requiem for a Dream,” and Christopher Nolan in “Interstellar.” Barbera emphasized Burstyn’s unique approach to acting, stating that she made “fragility and methodical discipline the tools of an approach to acting grounded in emotional truth, attentiveness and generosity toward one’s characters.” He concluded by praising her artistry, which could “illuminate pain and everyday resilience with dignity, irony and courage,” deeming it “an absolute model of authenticity in performance and civic engagement within the craft of acting.”

Responding to the honor, Burstyn expressed her immense gratitude and excitement, stating, “Wow! I not only get to travel to one of my top most favorite cities in the whole world, I get to return home carrying a Golden Lion in my arms! The Lifetime Achievement Award from the Venice Film Festival! I feel so honored— so happy — so filled with gratitude! Wow indeed!”

The Golden Lion will be presented to Burstyn during a special screening of Maggie Gyllenhaal’s short film “Flesh Impact.” This film, dedicated to Marilyn Monroe on the centenary of her birth, serves to underscore Burstyn’s “uncommon talent as a performer,” according to the festival. The cast of “Flesh Impact” also features Dakota Johnson, Peter Sarsgaard, and Sepideh Moafi. Johnson portrays Marilyn Monroe at the pinnacle of her fame, while Burstyn embodies a version of Monroe that the public never had the opportunity to witness. The film's title, “Flesh Impact,” originates from a phrase once used to describe Monroe’s captivating aura, suggesting she appeared so real and luminous on screen that viewers felt they could physically connect with her through the camera.

Looking ahead, Burstyn is scheduled to star alongside Taika Waititi in Kornél Mundruczó’s upcoming film “Place to Be.” The 83rd Venice Film Festival is slated to run from September 2 to September 12.
