Brighton Shatters Transfer Record with Staggering £46M Vuskovic Acquisition!

Brighton & Hove Albion have completed a significant club-record transfer, securing the services of Croatian defender Luka Vuskovic from Tottenham Hotspur. The deal is valued at an initial £46 million, with the potential to rise to £50 million through various add-ons. Vuskovic, a promising 19-year-old center-back, has committed to a five-year contract with Brighton, which also includes an option for an additional year. This high-profile acquisition follows two previous unsuccessful bids from Brighton last month, underscoring their persistent interest in the young talent.

Vuskovic's career trajectory has been impressive. He originally joined Tottenham in 2025 from his boyhood club, Hajduk Split, where he had already made history as the youngest player to feature in Croatia's top flight at just 16 years old, and subsequently, the club's youngest goalscorer. Last season, he showcased his capabilities during a loan spell at Hamburg, where he made 30 appearances in the Bundesliga, netting six goals. His stellar performance earned him the Rookie of the Season award and a coveted spot in the league's Team of the Year, highlighting his immediate impact at a high level of European football.

Brighton's head coach, Fabian Hurzeler, expressed his satisfaction with the signing, noting that the club had been closely monitoring Vuskovic's development. Hurzeler stated, “Last season he demonstrated he can play at a very high level and we want to help him build on that within our environment. There’s been a lot of external noise about Luka joining us, but he is still a young guy who will need time to adjust to the demands of playing for Brighton and the Premier League. We are confident that he will take this in his stride though.” This move also sees a direct exchange of defenders, as Vuskovic effectively replaces Netherlands international Jan Paul van Hecke, who has transferred to Tottenham for £52 million on a long-term deal.

On the international stage, Vuskovic has already earned six senior caps for Croatia and scored one goal. Notably, he made his World Cup debut against England in a group stage match last month, further cementing his status as a rising star. As Brighton prepares for the upcoming Premier League season, they will kick off their campaign at home against Aston Villa on Sunday, 23 August, with Vuskovic expected to be a key figure in their defensive lineup.
