Urgent Safety Alert: Common Anti-Spider Hack Hospitalises Toddler

A concerned mother, Elessame, has issued a vital warning to parents after her two-year-old son was hospitalized due to accidentally consuming a minuscule amount of peppermint oil. The incident, which Elessame shared on her TikTok page, underscores the critical message that even 'natural' household products can pose significant dangers, especially to young children.
Elessame had purchased the essential oil from a high street store with the intention of using it as a natural spider repellent, a common hack involving spraying it around doors and on skirting boards. Despite the bottle being nearly empty, a tiny residue remained. As she turned, the straw applicator from the bottle brushed against her son's lip, causing him to react instantly.
Upon realizing what had happened, Elessame immediately took action, brushing her son's teeth, providing him with water, and wiping the inside of his mouth to try and remove the oil. Her subsequent online search for advice quickly led her to contact the emergency department. After calling 111, she was instructed to take her son to the local A&E within the hour, anticipating a simple 'monitor at home' instruction.
However, the situation escalated at the hospital, where medical staff conducted heart rate and blood pressure checks. They found her son's readings to be lower than normal. Doctors then informed Elessame that her son would need to stay overnight, explaining that even a small amount – as little as one or two milliliters – of peppermint oil is considered poisonous and toxic, particularly for children under the age of five.
Through her TikTok video, Elessame aimed to raise awareness about this alarming experience. She emphasized that she had no prior knowledge that a substance perceived as 'natural and organic' could be so hazardous. Her caption further urged parents of toddlers to watch the video, to be aware of such risks, and to diligently keep all essential oils out of the reach of young children, describing the event as an 'unexpected chaotic and scary evening out of nowhere!'
The post resonated with many parents, with comments such as 'Natural doesn’t always mean safe. Thanks for sharing your story!!', 'Wow, never knew this - thanks for sharing!', and 'I’m glad your son is well. I have a 3 year old at home and had no idea. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING!' highlighting a widespread lack of awareness regarding the dangers of essential oils.
For parents seeking safer alternatives to peppermint oil for spider deterrence, the article also mentioned several options: ready-made spider repellent sprays (non-lethal and pleasant-smelling), spider vacuums (a humane way to catch and release spiders, often with an LED light for spotting them), and spider catchers (long-handled tools perfect for those who prefer to keep a distance while safely disposing of spiders without injury).
