Policemen staged a dramatic protest yesterday, blocking key entrance routes to the Presidential Villa in Abuja, escalating long-standing grievances regarding their retirement welfare. The action caused significant disruption and prompted an immediate security reinforcement, with heavily armed soldiers from the Brigade of Guards deployed to fortify the Villa's perimeter and maintain order.

The aggrieved officers, including many retirees, demanded their exemption from the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS). They allege that the CPS has subjected them to inadequate remuneration, irregular pension payments, and severe hardship during their retirement years. This protest is part of a broader, coordinated agitation that has persisted for years, with retired personnel consistently advocating for either an exit from the CPS or the establishment of a dedicated police pension structure that accounts for the unique risks associated with their service.

A central point of the renewed protest is the frustration over the delayed presidential assent to a bill, already passed by the National Assembly, which seeks to exempt police personnel from the CPS. Protest leaders warn that the continued waiting has deepened discontent among retirees, who find the current pension conditions "unjust and exploitative". Demonstrators, chanting solidarity songs and carrying placards, indicated that the protest could be sustained if their demands are not met, citing past failed engagements with authorities.

This situation highlights a growing welfare crisis within Nigeria’s security architecture, potentially impacting the morale of serving officers and increasing pressure on the Federal Government to resolve the contentious pension issue. The ongoing indefinite protest, organized by the Police Retired Officers Forum of Nigeria (PROF), has previously involved blocking access points in the nation’s capital, starting around July 2025 and again in April 2026 over unpaid pensions, despite security pushback.

Meanwhile, in a separate but related development concerning the nation's police force, President Bola Tinubu has given his approval for the establishment of a new campus for the Nigeria Police Academy. The new campus will be located in Erinja, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State. Furthermore, the President has sanctioned a special take-off grant of N15 billion for the institution.

This approval aligns with the provisions of the Nigeria Police Academy (Establishment) Act, 2021, which mandates the expansion of the Police Academy, currently situated in Wudil, into a multi-campus institution across various parts of the country. The N15 billion intervention fund is slated to be drawn from the 2026 allocation of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND). It will be utilized to support critical priority infrastructure, enhance academic facilities, provide student accommodation, and acquire core training assets for the new campus.

This decision followed a high-level consultative meeting that included key stakeholders: the Minister of Police Affairs, the Minister of Education (Tunji Alausa), officials from the Federal Ministry of Education, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission. As stated by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the President, President Tinubu emphasized that this expansion is expected to bolster institutional governance, strengthen modern policing education, and ultimately enhance national security.
