Unheard Coldplay Gems: Chris Martin's Secret Demos Hit the Auction Block!

An extraordinary archive of early Coldplay recordings, encompassing studio tapes, alternate mixes, and demos from the crucial formative sessions that predated and significantly shaped the band’s iconic debut album, Parachutes, is slated for auction this week through Wax Poetics. This collection offers a rare and intimate glimpse into Coldplay’s nascent stages before their meteoric rise to global fame.

The bulk of this valuable collection originates from British producer, mixer, and engineer Chris Allison, whose involvement was pivotal during the band's early career. The centerpiece of the archive revolves around Coldplay’s renowned “Blue Room” sessions, which took place at London’s Orinoco Studios shortly after the band secured their record deal with Parlophone. Wax Poetics, the auction house, describes this material as a vital window into the period that meticulously laid the groundwork for Parachutes, highlighting its profound influence on the album's development.

Among the specific items, the archive notably includes “High Speed,” a track that would ultimately become the only one on Parachutes not produced by Ken Nelson, having been solely produced by Allison. This song initially appeared on the Blue Room EP, Coldplay’s inaugural release for Parlophone in October 1999, before being re-recorded for the full-length album. Further enhancing the collection's depth, the lots feature original DAT mixes, various unreleased alternate versions of tracks, and a previously unheard take of “We Never Change.” A particularly significant item is a nine-track cassette containing some of the band’s earliest known recordings, two of which have never been released in any form whatsoever.

Adding to the collection’s unique appeal is an unusual item: an acoustic demo recorded by frontman Chris Martin. This demo was an original pitch for the title song of the 1999 James Bond film, The World Is Not Enough. Ultimately, the assignment was awarded to Garbage, whose rendition became the official theme. According to Wax Poetics, Martin’s version has never been officially released or even documented until now, making it an unprecedented find for fans and music historians alike.

Chris Allison, reflecting on the significance of these materials, stated, “This is a window into the writing, recording, production and promotion of some uniquely celebrated music artists – pieces of music history that deserve to be in the hands of fans, not gathering dust in a storage unit.” His words underscore the historical and emotional value embedded within these tapes, which truly document Coldplay at their absolute starting line.

The release of Parachutes in July 2000 marked a turning point, peaking at No. 51 on the Billboard 200 and eventually achieving double platinum certification in the U.S. The album later earned a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album. From this foundation, Coldplay blossomed into one of the defining stadium acts of the century, accumulating multiple Billboard 200 No. 1 albums and embarking on some of the highest-grossing touring runs in music history.

This particular auction is part of a broader “Alt/Indie, Rock & Pop” collection, which also features rare material linked to other prominent bands such as the Beta Band, the Wedding Present, and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Bidding for these items is open through July 19. A commendable percentage of the proceeds generated from the auction will be earmarked for Restore the Music, a charity dedicated to funding instruments and equipment in under-resourced state schools, further adding a philanthropic dimension to this significant event.
