U.S. Market Misses Out: The Range Rover Electric Powertrain You Might Never See!

The 2027 Range Rover Electric lineup introduces a powerful EV550 model for the U.S. market, boasting 542 horsepower. However, American consumers may miss out on the EV450 variant, which offers slightly less power but could potentially provide a longer driving range, prompting consideration of market-specific offerings.

U.S. Market Misses Out: The Range Rover Electric Powertrain You Might Never See!

The 2027 Range Rover lineup is already set to impress with a diverse range of powertrain options, including an inline-six, two V-8s, a plug-in hybrid, and a new electric vehicle (EV) variant. However, not every version of the Range Rover Electric will make its way to the U.S. market, leading to discussions about what American consumers might be missing.

For the U.S. market, the Range Rover Electric will feature a potent EV550 model. This dual-motor setup delivers a commanding 542 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque. Notably, this power output surpasses that of the standard V-8, which offers 523 hp and 553 lb-ft, despite sharing an identical starting price. Driving impressions of the EV550 indicate a vehicle that moves with authority, though it has been specifically tuned to avoid the abrupt 'head snap' often associated with powerful EVs. A minor observation during testing was a subtle torque steer when the accelerator pedal was floored, a characteristic perhaps unexpected in an SUV designed for smoothness and luxury.

The variant that may not reach American shores is the Range Rover EV450, often referred to as the 'forbidden fruit.' This model features approximately 444 horsepower and boasts a 0–62 mph acceleration time of 5.6 seconds. While this would make it the slowest variant in the U.S. market, it is still considerably quick for an SUV of its size and weight. For context, this is 1.1 seconds slower than Range Rover's estimated time for the more powerful EV550. One significant potential advantage of the EV450 could be a longer driving range. Although the official EPA-rated range for the U.S.-spec EV550 is still being finalized, with Range Rover estimating up to 333 miles, a lower-powered variant like the EV450 might offer increased efficiency and extended range, a feature highly valued in the luxury SUV segment, as demonstrated by models like the Cadillac Escalade iQ.

The decision to offer different powertrain options in various markets is common among luxury manufacturers like Porsche and BMW, which also provide extensive choices for their Cayenne and X5 models, respectively. While U.S. consumers will receive a high-performance electric option in the EV550, the absence of the EV450 raises questions about whether a potentially higher-range variant would have been a valuable addition, especially given the ongoing demand for maximized electric range in the burgeoning EV market.
