Two persons have been confirmed dead, and several others injured in an auto crash along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The incident occurred on February 2, 2025, around 7:15 a.m., near Danco Filling Station. It involved a Toyota Sienna bus, with registration number EPE 430 HT, driven by Adewale Yusuf, and a stationary luxury bus, with registration number KTU 835 XY, belonging to Young Shall Grow Transport Company and driven by Chukwudi Ilo from Anambra State.

The Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Sagamu, reported the accident barely 24 hours after another crash claimed one life and injured five persons near Redemption City on the same highway.

Confirming the incident yesterday, spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, CSP Omolola Odutola, said investigations revealed that the luxury bus had stopped in traffic due to a minor accident ahead when the Toyota Sienna, speeding excessively, lost control and rammed into its rear.

Odutola disclosed that five passengers in the Sienna bus sustained severe injuries and were rushed to Live Well Hospital, Sagamu. However, two male passengers, identified as Charles Izuchukwu, a staff member of Babcock University, and another unidentified individual, succumbed to their injuries at the hospital.

“The remains of the deceased have been deposited at Last Home Green Mortuary, Sagamu, while the driver of the Sienna bus and two other injured passengers are receiving treatment,” Odutola said.

The Motor Traffic Department (MTD) respondedp romptly to the scene, clearing the wreckage to restore normal traffic flow. Both vehicles were towed to the MTD office in Sagamu for further investigation and inspection by Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO).

Meanwhile, the Ogun State Police Command attributed reckless driving, excessive speeding, and negligence as major causes of road crashes. The command noted that driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, using substandard tyres, lack of focus, and disregard for traffic regulations contribute significantly to fatal accidents.

Motorists, particularly commercial drivers, were urged to exercise caution, adhere to speed limits, and avoid reckless behaviour. The command also warned against substance abuse and emphasised the need for roadworthy vehicles before any journey.

The police pledged commitment to enforcing traffic regulations to reduce fatalities, adding that violators of road safety rules would face legal consequences. Members of the public were encouraged to report reckless drivers and unsafe road conditions to the nearest police station or road safety officials.
