President Donald Trump recently announced that Coca-Cola had agreed to replace high-fructose corn syrup with cane sugar in its regular Coke sold in the United States. This announcement, posted on social media, was presented as a "very good move" by Trump, despite Coca-Cola not yet confirming the proposed change. The potential switch, however, immediately sparked questions among consumers and health experts regarding its actual implications for health.
Currently, American Coke is sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS), a liquid sweetener derived from cornstarch. HFCS is classified as a refined sugar, meaning it originates from natural sources but undergoes processing that removes other nutrients, leaving only pure sugar. Historically, Coca-Cola initially used cane sugar but transitioned to the more cost-effective high-fructose corn syrup in the early 1980s. Interestingly, many other regions globally continue to use cane sugar in their Coca-Cola products, a notable example being Mexican Coke, which is still sold in classic glass bottles in the U.S. and maintains its cane sugar formulation.
Despite the perception that cane sugar might be a healthier alternative, nutrition experts are in strong agreement that Coke sweetened with cane sugar offers no health advantages over its high-fructose corn syrup counterpart. Both are refined sugars that possess strikingly similar molecular structures, each containing an approximate 50/50 split of the simple sugars fructose and glucose. As Lisa Moskovitz, RD, CDN, and CEO of NY Nutrition Group, explained, while cane sugar may carry a "natural" halo effect, this benefit is superficial. She stated, "Cane sugar on the surface may seem healthier because it’s ‘natural,’ but this halo effect stops there."
The human body processes both cane sugar and high-fructose corn syrup in essentially the same manner. Caroline Susie, RDN, LD, a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, emphasized this point, stating, "Our bodies aren’t going to know if that’s cane sugar or high-fructose corn syrup. We just know that it is sugar and we need to break that down." Experts warn that excessive consumption of any refined sugar, regardless of its source, can lead to significant health risks, including a higher likelihood of weight gain, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and fatty liver disease. Susie concluded, "At the end of the day, it’s added sugar. Those added sugars really do add up."
Given these nutritional facts, experts generally advise against regular soda consumption, whether it contains cane sugar or high-fructose corn syrup. Moskovitz described soda as an "empty-calorie, blood glucose-spiking beverage." While diet soda, which contains no sugar or calories, is often considered a slightly better option, nutritionists still do not recommend it as it provides zero nutrients. The primary focus for hydration, according to Susie, should always be water.
For those seeking healthier alternatives to sugary drinks, experts suggest unsweetened tea and sparkling water. If a soda craving persists, Moskovitz recommends seltzer flavored with a splash of juice or infused with fresh fruits like berries, oranges, or limes, offering a more nutritious and hydrating option without the added sugars.
