Trail Blazers Rocked by NBA Fines, Personnel Suspended in Yang Hansen Scandal

The National Basketball Association (NBA) recently imposed a significant fine on the Portland Trail Blazers, penalizing the team $100,000 for violating league rules regarding contact with draft-ineligible players. The infraction specifically involved illegal contact made with Yang Hansen, a 7-foot prospect from China, in December 2023. This contact occurred two years prior to Hansen's eventual selection in the NBA draft, highlighting a clear breach of established league protocols.
In addition to the substantial financial penalty, the NBA also issued suspensions to two of the Trail Blazers' assistant general managers, Mike Schmitz and Sergi Oliva. Both officials were suspended for two weeks without pay, as the league concluded that both the team and these individuals had directly violated the rules governing interactions with players not yet eligible for the draft. This dual punishment underscores the NBA's strict stance on maintaining fairness and integrity in its draft process.
The Portland Trail Blazers acknowledged the violation, stating that the team self-reported the incident to the NBA once it became aware of the situation. They confirmed their full cooperation with the subsequent investigation and accepted the league's final determination and sanctions. This cooperative stance likely played a role in the resolution of the matter.
Yang Hansen, the player at the center of this controversy, was initially selected by the Memphis Grizzlies with the No. 16 pick in the 2025 draft. The Portland Trail Blazers later acquired the rights to Hansen as part of a trade conducted on draft night. Prior to entering the NBA, Hansen honed his skills over two seasons with the Qingdao Eagles, a team competing in China's premier professional basketball league. As a rookie this season for Portland, he has appeared in 41 games, contributing an average of 2.3 points and 1.6 rebounds across 7.2 minutes per game.
