Tragic End: Man Mobbed To Death In Lagos Weeks Before Wedding, Suspects Arrested

Basit Kolade, a groom who had recently returned to Nigeria from abroad for his wedding scheduled for later this month, tragically died on September 2 in Lagos State following a brutal mob attack. The incident, which occurred around Freeman Street, Lagos Island, involved a traffic altercation that escalated into lethal 'jungle justice'.

According to the state police command's spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, Basit and his partner, identified as Ayanda, were returning from Ebute Metta and heading towards Lagos Island in their black Lexus Jeep, registration number KSF 115 JZ. An alleged collision occurred when a motorcycle reportedly ran into their vehicle from behind. When Basit confronted the rider, he allegedly reversed his vehicle, hitting the motorcycle and causing the rider to fall. In an alternative account from eyewitnesses, Basit allegedly used his car to hit a male resident crossing the road and attempted to flee the scene without rendering aid.

Following the incident, irrespective of the initial trigger, a group of individuals emerged from the area and violently attacked Basit with dangerous weapons. While Basit was subjected to the severe beating, his woman, Ayanda, was reportedly rescued by some women in the vicinity. Basit sustained serious head injuries and was left unconscious.

He was subsequently rushed to the Lagos Island General Hospital for medical attention but was later confirmed dead by the medical personnel on duty. The police have since arrested four suspects in connection with Basit Kolade's death. The Command strongly condemned the incident, issuing a stern warning against mob action, jungle justice, or any form of self-help, reiterating that no individual or group has the right to take the law into their own hands and that all culpable parties will be arrested and prosecuted.
