Obi-Datti Fraud Feud: Sowore's Allegations Spark Fiery Rebuttals

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 election, has strongly defended his capacity to lead Nigeria, referencing his successful tenure as governor of Anambra State as a clear indicator of his potential to achieve similar results at the national level. Obi's assertion comes in response to recent remarks made by his former running mate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed. Baba-Ahmed, who ran alongside Obi on the Labour Party ticket during the 2023 presidential election, had suggested in a Channels Television interview that none of the prominent opposition figures, including Obi, possessed the capability to significantly improve Nigeria if elected in 2027.

In an interview with Arise TV journalist Ojy Okpe, Obi opted not to directly engage with Baba-Ahmed's assessment. Instead, he strategically redirected the focus to his documented achievements in Anambra State as irrefutable evidence of his administrative competence. He articulated his position, stating, “Well, I can only use an example of where I passed through. I passed through Anambra State and I improved the state in critical areas of development and I can do the same thing in Nigeria.”

Obi further elaborated on the core principles and immediate actions his administration would undertake if he were to be elected president. He emphasized an immediate priority on restoring civility and order within governance, alongside a drastic reduction in the currently perceived irresponsible cost of running government. He confidently stated, “I’m definitely sure that if given the opportunities, first I’ll bring civility and order and governance. I’ll be able to cut cost of governance which is irresponsible today. I’ll be able to do quite a number of things that will bring honour, respect to the country.”

When pressed for specific measures, Obi outlined several critical areas that would receive immediate and robust attention under his leadership. These include an unwavering commitment to combating corruption, addressing government waste, reinforcing law and order, and ensuring electoral credibility. He affirmed, “You know I’ll fight corruption head on. I’ll deal with the issue of waste. I’ll deal with the issue of law and order. Of course, what we’re talking about rigging the election cannot take place under my watch.”

Additionally, Obi pledged to uphold the independent functioning of political parties, stressing that his administration would operate strictly within the framework of established rules and institutional order. He promised that under his watch, “The parties will function as parties. Things will be done properly. There’s quite a number of things that can be done here properly.”

The NDC candidate also identified three overarching and immediate priorities for his potential presidency: fostering national unity, enhancing security across the country, and championing human-centered development. Within the sphere of human-centered development, he committed to prioritizing critical sectors such as health and education, alongside implementing measures specifically designed to alleviate poverty and uplift Nigerians. He articulated these priorities, stating, “I will focus on our priorities. One, to unite the country. The country is not united today. Two, to secure the country. Three, to ensure that we prioritize critical areas of development. Health, education, and pulling people out of poverty.”

This public exchange has reignited discussions about the evolving political dynamic between Peter Obi and Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, who were once united as presidential and vice-presidential candidates in the 2023 election under the Labour Party banner. While Baba-Ahmed has since pursued a distinct political trajectory, Obi has now successfully secured the presidential candidacy for the NDC, positioning himself for the upcoming 2027 presidential election.
