Tragedy Strikes Wings: Star Rookie Azzi Fudd's Season Ends Early with Knee Injury!
Dallas Wings' top draft pick, Azzi Fudd, will miss the rest of the WNBA season after undergoing a knee procedure. Despite her injury history, Fudd had a standout rookie season, leading the Wings in net rating and achieving historic rookie milestones. Her absence poses a significant challenge for the Wings as they aim to secure a playoff spot.Dallas Wings star guard Azzi Fudd, the No. 1 pick in this year's WNBA draft, will unfortunately miss the remainder of the current season. This setback comes as Fudd is scheduled to undergo an arthroscopic procedure on her injured right knee. The Wings organization announced on Wednesday that the procedure will take place in Connecticut early next week, sidelining their key player for the rest of their campaign.
Following the announcement, Fudd shared her thoughts on Instagram, expressing gratitude for the support and a determined outlook on her recovery. "I know exactly what comes next: rehab, put in the work, come back ready and better than before," she posted, acknowledging her family, inner circle, and the Wings organization. Fudd's recent injury is a recurrence of issues with her right knee; she previously suffered an ACL and meniscus tear in 2023, following another ACL and MCL tear in the same knee in 2019, highlighting a history of significant knee problems.
Fudd, known for her sharpshooting, last played on August 5th and has since been absent from Dallas's past five games. Despite the injury, her performance this season has been remarkable. In 30 appearances, she averaged 13.1 points, 1.7 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 0.8 blocks. Notably, she ranked fifth in the league with 1.7 steals per game and led the Wings with an impressive plus-13.1 net rating. Among first-year players, Fudd stands fourth in rookie scoring and first in made 3-pointers. Her talent was further highlighted in July when she became the first rookie in WNBA history to win the WNBA 3-point contest.
Before her professional career, Fudd spent five years at UConn, where she was a highly decorated athlete. During her tenure, she won a national title and was named the Final Four Most Outstanding Player. Her collegiate career in Storrs was marked by injuries, limiting her to just 42 games in her first three seasons. However, she managed to maintain better health towards the end of her time there, participating in 34 of 40 games during the Huskies' championship season and all 39 games in her final year.
The Dallas Wings, despite Fudd's stellar individual contributions, have faced challenges. They have managed to double their win total from the previous year but have struggled significantly post-All-Star break, recording a 2-7 run. This recent performance has seen them slide to eighth in the standings, a position that would currently secure them the final playoff spot. Fudd's absence for the remainder of the season will undoubtedly impact the team's efforts to maintain this playoff berth.
