Sons of Anarchy Cast Reunites for FX Thriller Series 'Legends'
The acclaimed cast of "Sons of Anarchy" is reuniting for a new limited series on FX and Hulu called "Legends." This meta-thriller will see the actors play themselves, facing a real-world threat at a fan convention, blurring the lines between their on-screen brotherhood and reality. Developed by star Charlie Hunnam, the show promises a unique adventure that's both a tribute to the original series and a fresh narrative twist.
More than a decade after Sons of Anarchy ended, much of its original cast is getting back together for Legends, a new FX meta-thriller that puts the actors themselves at the centre of the story.
FX has greenlit Legends, developed by Charlie Hunnam, who played Jax Teller in the original series. The project is not a conventional revival: Hunnam and his former co-stars will play fictionalized versions of themselves rather than returning as Jax, Clay, Gemma and the other characters they portrayed in Sons of Anarchy.
The unusual setup allows the series to bring the cast back together without undoing the deaths that shaped the original show's ending.
The Sons of Anarchy cast is back — as themselves
The confirmed cast includes Hunnam alongside Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates and Theo Rossi. The actors previously played Clay Morrow, Gemma Teller Morrow, Tara Knowles, Bobby Munson, Chibs, Tig and Juice respectively.
The premise begins at a fan convention, where the cast reunites more than ten years after Sons of Anarchy ended. Things take a dangerous turn when the line between the television series and the actors' real lives starts to disappear, leaving the group facing a threat unlike anything they encountered on screen.
That setup also solves a problem created by the original show's ending. Several of its major characters were killed off during the seven-season run, making a straightforward return of the fictional SAMCRO crew difficult. Hunnam has previously said he would not bring Jax back because the character's death was definitive.
Charlie Hunnam takes the idea in a new direction
Hunnam developed and wrote Legends and will serve as an executive producer alongside Jonathan Groff, who is joining the project as showrunner. The series is being produced by FX Productions and 20th Television.
FX Entertainment President Nick Grad described Hunnam's idea as both a tribute to Sons of Anarchy and a meta twist on what fans expect from a reunion. The project has reportedly been in development with Hunnam for several years before receiving the green light.
There is also an important distinction from the original series: Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter is not involved in Legends. Sutter has publicly said that the new project is about the legacy of the show rather than continuing the characters and story he created, while giving Hunnam his blessing.
The original Sons of Anarchy, created by Sutter, ran for seven seasons from 2008 to 2014 and followed Jax Teller as he struggled with his place inside the outlaw motorcycle club SAMCRO. The series became one of FX's defining dramas and later spawned the five-season spinoff Mayans M.C.
Legends is currently in development for FX and Hulu, with no release date announced yet. For fans expecting the old gang to simply ride back into Charming, this reunion is taking a much stranger route: the actors are returning, but the characters are staying dead.
