Tragedy Strikes: Ghana Mourns Victims of Deadly Military Recruitment Stampede

A tragic stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra during a Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise on November 12, 2025, claimed the lives of six young job seekers and left dozens injured. This devastating incident has sparked widespread national mourning, outrage, and urgent calls for significant reforms in public recruitment procedures and a deeper re-evaluation of Ghana's unemployment crisis.
Immediately following the tragedy, a high-level government delegation, led by Deputy Defence Minister Ernest Brogya Genfi, embarked on an official mission on Thursday, November 13, 2025, to commiserate with the bereaved families. Due to heavy downpours, the delegation focused on visiting two families: that of the late Yvonne Amoateng in Adentan and the late Matilda Midorse in Kokompe, Kpone-Katamanso District Assembly. Deputy Defence Minister Genfi assured the families of governmental support, including immediate funeral expenses, potential psychological counselling, and long-term financial assistance, acknowledging the state's responsibility. The multi-sectoral delegation included Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, and Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, Greater Accra Regional Minister, underscoring a comprehensive governmental response.
International solidarity also emerged, with the United States Embassy in Accra offering its deepest sympathies to the affected families and the people of Ghana, highlighting the global recognition of the tragedy. The GAF confirmed 34 casualties in total, including the six fatalities, and has initiated a Board of Inquiry to investigate the circumstances leading to the incident, with the Defence Ministry assuring public of support for the injured and future preventive measures.
The Parliamentary Committee on Defence and Interior, chaired by Hon. James Agalga, visited victims receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital. The Committee stressed the need for parliamentary intervention, confirming a Speaker's directive for a probe. Hon. Ntim Fordjour, Ranking Member, called for the suspension of all ongoing nationwide recruitment exercises until adequate safety measures are implemented and urged for compensation for the deceased's families, along with priority recruitment for medically fit survivors. Despite these widespread calls for suspension, the recruitment exercise controversially continued at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, attracting thousands of applicants amidst a heavy security presence, just a day after the Accra disaster.
The tragedy has ignited a national conversation about systemic failures. Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa called for robust protection for citizens aspiring to join the Ghana Armed Forces, emphasizing that no Ghanaian should lose their life in such a patriotic pursuit and urging for reforms so
