Tragedy Strikes Dreamstate Festival: One Dead, Six Hospitalized in Australia
A tragic incident unfolded at the Dreamstate music festival in Sydney Olympic Park, Australia, on Saturday, February 7, resulting in the death of one man and the hospitalization of six other attendees. New South Wales Police were actively patrolling the electronic music event when several festival-goers reportedly began experiencing "medical episodes," according to TMZ.
The man who died at the scene was reportedly in his 40s and had not been formally identified at the time of reporting. Among the six hospitalized individuals, one person remains in critical condition. Authorities have established a crime scene and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, with a report being prepared for the coroner. The New South Wales Police informed People that an investigation into the incident has commenced.
Investigators are exploring the possibility that the deceased man may have suffered cardiac arrest, potentially linked to a suspected drug overdose, according to 9News Australia. Police are also examining whether multiple attendees experienced a mass drug overdose during the festival, which is known online as the “ultimate trance and techno destination” and featured prominent artists such as Paul van Dyk, Vini Vici, Gareth Emery, Ben Nicky, and Giuseppe Ottaviani.
Despite the severity of the situation, officials confirmed there was no pill-testing facility available at the event, as reported by TMZ. This revelation comes after Dreamstate organizers shared a warning on their Instagram Story from VIC Health, cautioning attendees about “high-dose MDMA capsules and pills circulating in Victoria.” John Graham, Australia’s Minister for Music and the Night Time Economy, reiterated to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) the absence of a trial pill-testing facility but affirmed that a “safety action plan was in place” at the event and adhered to government regulations.
A spokesperson for NSW Health detailed to ABC various harm reduction initiatives implemented at the festival. These included the presence of support and health promotion workers, health messaging campaigns, provision of free chilled water, misting fans, designated chill-out spaces, and readily available well-equipped medical services. A second day of the Dreamstate event was scheduled for Sunday, February 8, at Melbourne’s Flemington Racecourse.
