Tom Hiddleston's Spy Thriller Resurgence: 'James Bond Replacement' Series Scores Big 10 Years On

Nearly a decade after its initial premiere, Tom Hiddleston’s acclaimed spy thriller, The Night Manager, is set to return with its highly anticipated second season. Collider exclusively previewed a new image from the series, which will premiere on Prime Video on January 11. The first three episodes of The Night Manager Season 2 will be available on its premiere date, with the final three episodes released weekly on January 18, January 25, and February 1. The series has already been renewed for a third season, expected to air in late 2026 or early 2027.

Season 2 picks up with Jonathan Pine (Tom Hiddleston), now living a seemingly uneventful life under the alias Alex Goodwin, a low-level MI6 officer performing routine surveillance. However, Pine is drawn back into action when he encounters Teddy Dos Santos (Diego Calva), a Colombian businessman, leading him into a violent confrontation. On this new journey, he also meets Roxana (Camila Morrone), a businesswoman who reluctantly assists him in infiltrating Teddy’s illicit drug and arms operation. Pine finds himself plunged deep into a deadly plot involving the training of a guerrilla army in Colombia, racing against time to expose a conspiracy designed to destabilize a nation. Jonathan must decide the extent of his commitment and whom he is willing to protect before it's too late.

The Night Manager Season 2 debuted in the UK over the New Year, receiving immediate critical acclaim and a certified fresh status. While familiar faces like Tom Hollander and Elizabeth Debicki are absent this season, the series is lauded for its globe-trotting mission and a talented new cast. It has earned a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score from critics, who have praised its writing, tone, and craft. Hiddleston’s return as the former British spy and Diego Calva’s portrayal of a worthy and menacing villain have also been highlighted. Alongside Hiddleston, Calva, and Morrone, the series features a strong ensemble cast including Olivia Colman, Paul Chahidi, Hayley Squires, Indira Varma, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Slavko Sobin, and Unax Ugalde. The audience’s verdict is still pending, but strong critical reception suggests the possibility of a third season.

Beyond his role as Jonathan Pine, Tom Hiddleston is widely recognized for his portrayal of Loki in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). He first appeared as the God of Mischief in 2011’s Thor, starring Chris Hemsworth, and went on to feature in several Thor and Avengers films before leading his own Disney+ series, which concluded with two successful seasons. Hiddleston is set to reprise his role as Loki next year in the highly anticipated superhero mashup, Avengers: Doomsday, expected to be one of the biggest movies of the year. The film, dropping in theaters on December 18, will also see the return of other main stars from the Infinity Saga, including Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers and Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, as well as X-Men heroes like Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Kelsey Grammer, and James Marsden. Loki, having transformed into the God of Stories and now holding the timelines together, will play a crucial part, though how he fits into the larger narrative remains to be seen.

The question of Hiddleston’s return as Loki beyond Doomsday, specifically in the 2027 film Secret Wars, remains uncertain. This will likely be difficult to predict until after Doomsday's release. Many fans speculate that despite ascending to new power at the end of Loki Season 2, Hiddleston's character is a prime candidate to lose his life. This would serve as a powerful way to establish Doctor Doom (rumored to be played by Robert Downey Jr.) as a formidable threat, much as Thanos (Josh Brolin) did at the beginning of Avengers: Infinity War.
