Tinubu's 2027 Re-election Bid Gathers Momentum Amidst Key Endorsements

As Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, political alignments and endorsements are already shaping the landscape, with a significant focus on President Bola Tinubu’s bid for a second term. Various political entities, including the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and key figures within the All Progressives Congress (APC), have declared their unwavering support, highlighting strategic political calculations and tangible development initiatives as reasons for their backing.

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has notably chosen not to submit the name of a presidential candidate to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the 2027 elections. This decision, as explained by APGA National Publicity Secretary Mazi Ejimofor Opara, stems from the party’s endorsement of President Bola Tinubu for a second term in office. Following extensive consultations, the APGA National Executive Committee (NEC) resolved against fielding a presidential candidate, framing its support for Tinubu’s re-election as being in the national interest. While APGA will not contest the presidential election, Opara emphasized the party's continued engagement in the electoral process, having successfully uploaded the names of its candidates for the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly elections to the INEC portal, thus ensuring active participation in other elective positions nationwide.

Within the ruling All Progressives Congress, key leaders are also galvanizing support for President Tinubu and his administration. Hon. Garba Datti Muhammad, the APC National Vice Chairman for the North West, extended his congratulations to Vice President Kashim Shettima on his re-nomination as the APC vice-presidential candidate by President Tinubu. Muhammad lauded Tinubu’s decision as a "strategic political calculation" that would significantly ease the path to victory for the APC in 2027. He described Vice President Shettima as a loyal, committed, competent, and dependable ally, expressing public satisfaction with his dedication to the nation and calling on party members and Nigerians to support the APC administration's efforts to deliver on its mandate.

In Benue State, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, is leading efforts to restore the state's former prominence, assuring residents that renewed initiatives are underway. During a recent hosting of political heavyweights from the state's APC, Akume received pledges of loyalty to his leadership. He thanked the delegation, which included prominent figures like Emmanuel Jime, and urged them to remain united and focused on collective development. Akume, a former Benue state governor (1999-2007), stressed the critical importance of unity and cooperation among APC stakeholders for sustaining political stability and achieving the aspirations of the people. He assured that his leadership would prioritize Benue's interests and work towards restoring its economic and political relevance. He also called for unwavering support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration, asserting that the "Renewed Hope Agenda" is designed for sustainable national development. Akume also highlighted the President's unprecedented financial support to states and local governments, indicating that development issues within states rest with state leadership. The event culminated in a unanimous endorsement of President Bola Tinubu’s second term bid and a resounding vote of confidence in Akume’s leadership. Earlier, Emmanuel Jime had raised concerns about the deterioration of democracy in Benue and urged Akume to champion a return to internal democracy, inclusiveness, and fairness within the APC.

Similarly, Imo State has firmly positioned itself in support of President Tinubu’s re-election. Hon. Declan Emelumba, the Imo State Commissioner for Information, Public Orientation, and Strategy, emphatically stated that the people of the state recognize no other candidate for the 2027 presidential race apart from President Bola Tinubu. This declaration was made during a tour of federal and state government projects, organized by the Renewed Hope Ambassadors in collaboration with the Presidential Media Team. Emelumba highlighted that as an APC state, governed by Governor Hope Uzodimma – who also chairs the Progressive Governors’ Forum and serves as the Director General of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors – victory is assured for Tinubu and other APC candidates. He underscored the tangible benefits of collaboration between the Imo state and federal governments, both under APC leadership, citing the execution of projects and programs that have added significant value to the people of the state. These include the reconstruction of the Owerri-Mbaise-Umuahia and Owerri–Okigwe federal roads, which have greatly improved interstate connectivity, reduced travel time, lowered vehicle operating costs, and boosted commercial activities, serving as a vital gateway between Nigeria's South-East, South-South, and northern regions. Another landmark project is the upgraded Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, which was commissioned by Vice President Kashim Shettima. This upgrade, a partnership with the federal government, has already facilitated international flights and pilgrimages, with plans to extend the runway from 2,700 to 3,200 meters to accommodate wide-bodied aircraft, aiming to fulfill its original design as an international cargo airport. The projects exemplify the significance of states aligning with the center for development, as noted by Tunde Rahman, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media, who also emphasized the long-term gains of reforms like subsidy removal.
