The Great Charge: Porsche & Audi Lead the Shift to Tesla's Supercharger Network

The automotive industry is undergoing a significant transformation with the rapid acceleration of the electric vehicle (EV) revolution. As major automakers commit to electrifying a substantial portion of their lineups by 2030, and with legislation in states like California and New York targeting the prohibition of new internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle sales by 2035, the need for robust charging infrastructure has become paramount. Many manufacturers are now looking to Tesla, recognizing its industry-leading Supercharger network and its North American Charging Standard (NACS) as a crucial solution to address range anxiety and charging reliability.
Tesla's Supercharger network is widely acknowledged as the premier EV charging infrastructure, boasting the largest coverage and a reputation for superior reliability compared to competing DC fast charging networks. The NACS port has emerged as the de facto industry standard, prompting a swift adoption trend among automakers. This involves either switching the charging ports on their vehicles to NACS or providing adapters to enable access to Tesla’s extensive NACS-based Superchargers. Porsche and Audi have recently joined this growing list of NACS converts, announcing access for their EVs through newly supplied factory adapters.
For Audi E-tron owners, access to the Tesla Supercharger network is becoming a reality. Most 2025 model year E-trons, including the new Q6 E-tron, A6 Sportback E-tron, and E-Tron GT, will include an Audi factory NACS to J1772-CCS adapter as a standard accessory. It is important to note that this adapter is exclusively designed for use with DC fast charging systems and is not intended for Level 2 home or destination AC chargers. Audi plans to notify current E-tron owners in the near future regarding the availability of these adapters, though Q4 E-tron owners currently appear to be excluded for the time being. Upon gaining access, Tesla stations will appear as Points of Interest in the MyAudi app and MMI navigation, and users will need the Tesla App to initiate and pay for charging sessions.
Porsche EVs are following a similar path to gain Tesla Supercharger access. Owners will utilize a Porsche factory-supplied NACS to J1772-CCS adapter, also restricted to DC fast charging networks. For now, the Tesla App will be required for starting and paying for charging, with a transition to the My Porsche app expected in the coming months. The adapter will be provided free of charge for buyers of 2026 model year Taycan and Macan EVs. Prior model year Macan owners and all Macan owners will also be eligible for a complimentary adapter once their My Porsche app indicates readiness. However, owners of 2024 and older Taycan models can obtain an adapter immediately by purchasing it from the Porsche online shop or a local dealer for $185, plus applicable taxes and shipping charges.
This widespread adoption of the NACS standard by major European luxury brands like Porsche and Audi underscores a crucial step towards standardizing EV charging infrastructure in North America. By leveraging Tesla’s reliable and expansive Supercharger network, these automakers are significantly enhancing the convenience and viability of EV ownership for their customers, addressing a key challenge in the ongoing transition to electric mobility.
