The Funeral Portrait Makes History with Mainstream Rock Airplay No. 1

The rock band The Funeral Portrait has achieved a significant milestone, securing its third consecutive No. 1 hit on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Airplay chart. Their latest track, “Dark Thoughts,” claimed the top spot on the Jan. 24-dated survey, marking a 3-for-3 streak for the band. This success follows their previous chart-toppers: “Suffocate City,” featuring Spencer Charnas, which reigned in 2024, and “Holy Water,” featuring Ivan Moody, which hit No. 1 last year.
A three-in-a-row streak at the beginning of an act's career on the Mainstream Rock Airplay chart is a rare accomplishment. Historically, 3 Doors Down was one of the first to achieve this feat with their initial three charted singles: “Kryptonite,” “Loser,” and “Duck and Run,” between 2000 and 2001. The Pretty Reckless surpassed this by securing four consecutive No. 1s with “Heaven Knows,” “Messed Up World,” “Follow Me Down,” and “Take Me Down” from 2014 to 2016. Currently, Jelly Roll is in the midst of his own impressive four-in-a-row streak, which began in 2022 with “Dead Man Walking,” followed by “Need a Favor,” the Falling in Reverse collaboration “All My Life,” and “Liar.”
Beyond its dominance on Mainstream Rock Airplay, “Dark Thoughts” also demonstrated strong performance across other rock formats. The song climbed from No. 15 to No. 13 on the all-rock-format, audience-based Rock & Alternative Airplay chart, garnering 2.6 million audience impressions, a 16% increase in the week ending Jan. 15, according to Luminate. The Funeral Portrait’s previous best on this tally was “Holy Water,” which peaked at No. 8 last year. Furthermore, “Dark Thoughts” ranked at No. 22, after reaching No. 20, on the most recently published multimetric Hot Hard Rock Songs chart (dated Jan. 17, reflecting data from Jan. 2-8). The track also earned a notable 214,000 official U.S. streams.
“Dark Thoughts” is featured on The Funeral Portrait’s second studio album, Greetings From Suffocate City, which was released in 2024. To date, the album has accumulated 40,000 equivalent album units. It is important to note that all Billboard charts dated Jan. 24 were scheduled to update on Billboard.com on Wednesday, Jan. 21, a day later than usual due to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day holiday on Jan. 19.
