The Boys Deliver Long-Awaited TV Reunion After Six-Year Hiatus

In a detailed discussion with Collider's Steve Weintraub, "The Boys" showrunner Eric Kripke delved into the intricacies of Season 5, Episode 5, touching upon significant events such as Firecracker's "heartbreaking" demise, the ambitious "Cameogasm" sequence, and the highly anticipated "Supernatural" reunion. Kripke had previously warned that no one would be safe in the final season, a sentiment dramatically underscored by Homelander's increasingly ruthless actions.
Firecracker's (Valorie Curry) shocking death in Episode 5 was a planned event, conceived "for a long time" before the season premiered. Kripke explained that the character's blind devotion and ultimate betrayal by Homelander was a deliberate narrative choice, mirroring real-world parallels where individuals "debase themselves" for a leader only to be discarded once their utility is exhausted. He cited examples like Pam Bondi and Marjorie Taylor Greene in relation to this dynamic. Kripke praised Valorie Curry's performance, noting how she "elevated those scenes" and made Firecracker's struggle truly felt by the audience, despite her predetermined tragic fate. The scene's execution by director Phil Sgriccia also played a crucial role in its impactful and surprising nature.
The episode also featured what Kripke and executive producer Evan Goldberg coined "Cameogasm," a spectacular collision of worlds involving numerous celebrity cameos, including Seth Rogen and Will Forte, who were brutally killed off. Kripke revealed that the sequence served as a commentary on the perceived haplessness of "the left" in combating "the right," aiming to highlight their inability to effectively communicate. This ambitious undertaking required celebrities to travel to Toronto, showcasing their commitment. Furthermore, "Cameogasm" provided a unique opportunity for a "Supernatural" reunion, bringing together Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Misha Collins, and director Phil Sgriccia. Kripke described it as a "high school reunion" for himself and Goldberg, with the joy of seeing different groups of collaborators intermingling and having a blast. Despite initial nervousness about introducing such a "curveball" late in the final season, the writers insisted it was the perfect "change-up" to explore stories and character depths, such as Terror's, that might otherwise be overlooked.
Regarding episode lengths, Kripke clarified that while Season 5 episodes are generally close to an hour, the series finale would not be an extended 90-minute special, but rather around an hour and five or six minutes. He assured that all episodes are "jam-packed" with content, with "no filler" and every scene serving a purpose, ensuring the audience remains engaged without getting bored from excessive length.
Looking ahead, Kripke provided updates on the expanding "The Boys" universe. The prequel series "Vought Rising," which features Jensen Ackles, is now expected to debut in 2027, not this year or early next, primarily due to extensive VFX work and the time required for localization across various markets. Kripke has seen cuts through Episode 7 and expressed optimism about the show's development, noting that showrunner Paul Grellong has "really exciting notions" for potential second and third seasons. Additionally, "The Boys: Mexico" is progressing well, with a script delivered to Amazon and positive feedback received during a recent notes call. The series, set in Mexico City after "The Boys" Season 5, is described as "very funny" by Kripke, who is hopeful for its future.
