A shallow grave and the victim's phone were recovered as investigations continue.
The Kwara State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) has successfully apprehended Soliu Olarewaju Mujeed, a 21-year-old suspect, in connection with the alleged kidnap and murder of a 60-year-old electrical technician, Olarewaju Olusegun Afolabi. The significant breakthrough was announced on Sunday by the state Commandant, Abbas Nda Mohammed, during a press briefing held at the command headquarters in Ilorin, the state capital.
The investigation commenced following the disappearance of Olarewaju Olusegun Afolabi, who was last seen on June 7th, 2026. He had reportedly left his residence to oversee an electrical installation project but failed to return, prompting immediate concern among his family members. After four days of unsuccessful attempts to contact him, the matter was officially reported to the NSCDC Tracking Unit on June 11th, 2026.
Shortly after the victim's disappearance, his family began receiving insistent ransom demands from his mobile phone. The callers initially demanded ₦2 million, but the family managed to raise and pay ₦120,000 as instructed, hoping for the safe return of their loved one. The NSCDC launched an intensive, intelligence-led investigation, employing digital tracking and meticulous analysis of financial transactions linked to the victim’s bank accounts. These advanced investigative techniques ultimately led operatives to the suspect.
Upon his arrest and subsequent interrogation, Soliu Olarewaju Mujeed confessed to his involvement in the heinous crime. He revealed that he had known the deceased previously, having worked as his assistant in electrical installation services. A personal grievance stemming from a disagreement between them reportedly fueled his motive. The suspect admitted to luring Olarewaju Olusegun Afolabi to an uncompleted building situated in the Kangile, Kunlende area of Ilorin metropolis, under the false pretense of inspecting a new electrical project.
At the uncompleted building, the suspect confessed to attacking and killing the victim. Following the murder, he dispossessed the deceased of his mobile phone and SIM card, which he then utilized to contact the victim's family and orchestrate the ransom demands. During the ongoing investigation, the suspect led NSCDC operatives to the crime scene, where a shallow grave, strongly suspected to contain the remains of the victim, was discovered. Furthermore, the victim’s mobile phone and SIM card were recovered from the suspect's possession, serving as crucial evidence.
Commandant Abbas Nda Mohammed confirmed that investigations are still ongoing to ensure all aspects of the case are thoroughly examined. Once the NSCDC completes its findings, the suspect will be transferred to the appropriate sister security agency for further investigation and prosecution. The Commandant took the opportunity to reassure the residents of Kwara State of the NSCDC's unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property. He emphasized the corps' dedication to working tirelessly in collaboration with other security agencies to rid the state of criminal elements and urged the public to remain vigilant, providing timely and credible information to assist law enforcement efforts.
