Tennis Triumph! Naomi Osaka Stuns World No. 1 to Reach Historic Wimbledon Quarterfinal

Naomi Osaka has achieved a significant career milestone at Wimbledon 2026, reaching her first-ever quarterfinal after a compelling victory over world number one Aryna Sabalenka. The 14th-seeded Japanese star defeated Sabalenka 6-2, 7-6(2) on Centre Court on Sunday, July 5th, in a match lasting one hour and 28 minutes. This triumph not only propelled Osaka further into the tournament but also ended Sabalenka’s remarkable streak of 14 consecutive Grand Slam quarterfinals.

The victory was laden with several notable records for Osaka. It marked her first win against Aryna Sabalenka in eight years, with their last encounter resulting in Osaka's maiden Grand Slam title at the 2018 US Open. Sabalenka had dominated their previous three meetings in 2026. Furthermore, Osaka's second-set tiebreak win (7-2) halted Sabalenka’s Open Era record of 21 consecutive Grand Slam tiebreaks won, a streak that encompassed both men's and women's games. Throughout her four matches at Wimbledon, Osaka has yet to drop a single set, and her grass-court record for the season stands impressively at 8-1, marking her most grass-court wins in a single calendar year.

In the match against Sabalenka, Osaka established early dominance, breaking serve with a backhand winner to take a 2-1 lead in the opening set, which she ultimately secured 6-2. The second set proved more competitive, but Osaka took firm control of the tiebreak through deep, steady baseline hitting, capitalizing on a series of unforced errors from Sabalenka. She converted her second match point with a decisive forehand return winner.

Following her win, Osaka expressed gratitude to her support system. Speaking on court, she credited her coach, Tomasz Wiktorowski, and her entire team, stating, “The big Polish man, shout out Tomasz, shout out my team. My team is the best team ever. I have so much fun with them, I’ve learned so much and I’m so grateful that they’re on this journey with me.” She also playfully attributed her powerful performance to her mother’s cooking, noting, “She cooks a lot. I feel like her cooking is powering me. I would like another meal tonight.”

Away from her on-court achievements, Naomi Osaka has also transformed the traditional Wimbledon walk-on into a major fashion event. Her tournament wardrobe features custom designs by Tokyo-based designer Hana Yagi. For the Sabalenka match, she graced Centre Court in a draped, layered Japanese ceremonial-style kimono. Her earlier tournament looks included a gown adorned with three-dimensional embroidery of cranes and cherry blossoms, complete with bell sleeves and an obi belt, as well as a custom bomber jacket featuring a long train. When questioned about her attire for the upcoming quarterfinal, Osaka hinted, “I don’t know. I might dial it back a little bit.”

Osaka is now set to face Czech 10th seed Karolina Muchova in the quarterfinals, scheduled for Tuesday on No. 1 Court. This highly anticipated matchup will be a direct rematch of the Bad Homburg final nine days prior, where Osaka was forced to retire due to a foot issue. Their career head-to-head record is currently tied at 3-3.
