Tech for All: FirstBank and Pointek Team Up to Revolutionize Gadget Access with Easy Payments!
FirstBank of Nigeria has partnered with Pointek to launch FirstEase, a Buy-Now-Pay-Later solution for electronic devices. This initiative allows eligible customers to purchase smartphones, laptops, and other gadgets with a 30% deposit and spread payments over up to six months, addressing affordability challenges and promoting financial inclusion.
FirstBank of Nigeria Limited has officially partnered with technology retailer Pointek to launch its innovative FirstEase Buy-Now-Pay-Later digital lending solution, aiming to significantly expand access to essential electronic devices such as smartphones, laptops, tablets, and household appliances. This strategic collaboration is designed to alleviate the financial burdens customers often face when purchasing high-cost gadgets upfront, thereby making vital technology more affordable and accessible to a broader segment of the Nigerian population.
The initiative stems from a recognized need to address the rising cost of electronic devices and the critical role they play in modern life, including education, employment, entrepreneurship, daily communication, and banking activities. Many individuals and professionals require sophisticated gadgets with improved storage capacity, memory, and functionality for their work and personal development but struggle with immediate full payment. The FirstEase solution directly confronts this challenge by allowing eligible customers to acquire needed products immediately and spread payments over a flexible period.
Under the terms of the partnership, customers can access the FirstEase solution through FirstBank’s FirstMobile and LIT applications, as well as Pointek’s online platform and physical outlets. The payment structure requires customers to make a 30 percent deposit of the purchase price, with FirstBank financing the remaining 70 percent. Repayment periods are flexible, extending up to 180 days (six months), at a stated interest rate of three percent. Eligibility for the service is primarily based on applicants having an active FirstBank account and maintaining a transaction history with the bank. The service is initially being tested among salaried customers, with plans for a broader expansion as the program evolves, and customers with good repayment records may qualify for higher financing limits on subsequent purchases.
Abednego Ugwueke, FirstBank’s Group Head of e-Business and Retail Products, emphasized that the collaboration is a direct response to the financial challenges customers encounter when acquiring electronic devices. He highlighted the bank’s commitment to innovation, financial inclusion, and providing responsible access to financial services. Ugwueke stressed that the objective is to help customers access necessary products in a sustainable manner, ensuring they receive transparent information regarding eligibility requirements and repayment terms to enable informed decisions.
Chukwuka Okonkwo, FirstBank’s Head of Personal Banking, further elaborated that the partnership builds upon the bank's extensive experience in digital lending and its significant investment in platforms designed to simplify credit access. He confirmed that the FirstEase solution offers a seamless digital lending experience, easily accessible through the bank's mobile applications and Pointek’s website. Okonkwo noted that the bank assesses customers’ eligibility and financing limits using their transaction records, ensuring a tailored and secure process. He also mentioned that FirstEase complements FirstBank’s existing suite of digital lending products, including FirstAdvance, FirstCredit, and Agent Credit, reinforcing the bank’s commitment to providing diverse financial solutions.
From Pointek’s perspective, Dr. Godwin Ajala, Director of Business, underscored the increasing importance of mobile devices as essential tools for acquiring skills, discovering employment opportunities, and connecting people to economic activities. He acknowledged that while access to technology products is crucial, affordability remains a significant barrier for many Nigerians. Ajala explained that the partnership combines Pointek’s expertise in providing technology products with FirstBank’s robust financing capabilities, extending Pointek’s role beyond mere sales to connecting Nigerians with tools that support their personal and professional development. He highlighted that the initiative’s broader value lies in the economic opportunities that enhanced technology access can create, although he also noted that true digital participation requires more than just devices, necessitating internet connectivity, digital skills, and access to services.
This partnership exemplifies FirstBank’s broader strategy to leverage digital technology for improving access to financial services and offering customers more flexible payment options. By integrating financial solutions directly into the shopping experience, FirstBank and Pointek are not only making essential gadgets more attainable but also fostering greater financial inclusion and enabling individuals and businesses across Nigeria to participate more effectively in the digital economy.
