Franklin Templeton Unleashes Bitcoin DRIP ETFs, Redefining Crypto Dividends
Bitcoin has matured as an investable asset, supported by deeper market infrastructure, broader adoption and a growing understanding of the role it can play in portfolios.
Franklin Templeton has officially launched two groundbreaking exchange-traded funds (ETFs) on Nasdaq, designed to innovate how investors gain exposure to bitcoin through traditional equity dividends. The Franklin U.S. Equity Bitcoin DRIP Index ETF (FBEQ) and the Franklin U.S. Innovation Bitcoin DRIP Index ETF (FIBT) have completed their final regulatory steps, following initial registration filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission in June and subsequent detailed disclosures in October.
The core mechanism of these funds involves routing dividends from large U.S. companies into a dedicated bitcoin sleeve, which systematically expands with each payment. FBEQ, for instance, tracks the VettaFi U.S. Large-Cap 500 Bitcoin DRIP Index. This index comprises the 500 largest U.S. companies by market capitalization, weighted by their float-adjusted market cap, with a notable concentration in the information technology sector. At its inception, the index allocates 95% of its portfolio to these stocks and 5% to bitcoin (BTC).
In a departure from traditional dividend reinvestment plans (DRIPs), which typically use cash dividends to acquire more shares of the dividend-paying company, Franklin's innovative approach redirects this cash into bitcoin. Every dividend paid by the underlying companies, whether regular or special, is reinvested into BTC at market open on the day following the ex-date. This unique methodology means that for a fund holder, the continuous dividend stream from America’s largest corporations effectively transforms into a recurring bitcoin purchase, simplifying exposure without requiring an exchange account, a personal wallet, or direct custody decisions.
While designed to grow bitcoin exposure, the fund incorporates strict limits to manage this allocation. At each quarterly rebalance, any bitcoin allocation exceeding 5% of the portfolio is trimmed down to 4.5%. Furthermore, if the bitcoin position surpasses 20% of the index between rebalances, a reduction to 4.5% is mandated within two business days, with the proceeds being reinvested back into equities. This structure firmly positions the funds as stock funds augmented with a bitcoin component, rather than pure bitcoin investment vehicles.
To achieve its bitcoin exposure, the funds do not hold BTC on-chain directly. Instead, they gain access through a diversified range of financial instruments. These include bitcoin exchange-traded products (ETPs), which may encompass Franklin's own spot bitcoin fund, as well as bitcoin futures and options, or depositary receipts. In some instances, these exposures may be facilitated through a Cayman Islands subsidiary, ensuring comprehensive yet indirect access to the digital asset.
Operating with transparency, FBEQ carries an expense ratio of 0.09% and notably charges no 12b-1 fee. The fund is managed by Franklin Advisory Services, with Franklin Templeton Institutional serving as the sub-advisor, underscoring the firm's robust oversight and expertise in asset management.
Franklin Templeton executives have highlighted the strategic rationale behind these new offerings. Dina Ting, SVP and Head of Index Investments, stated that
