Table Mountain Rises From Ashes: Iconic Trails Reopen After Devastating April Fires

The South African National Parks (SANParks) has officially announced the second phase of reopening for the Silvermine area within Table Mountain National Park, restoring access to some of Cape Town’s most cherished hiking and nature trails. This significant development follows the successful reopening of Silvermine Gate 2 and sections of Tokai on July 1, after a devastating fire in late April 2025 engulfed approximately 2,800 hectares of the park’s central region.
Effective Monday, Silvermine Gate 1, situated on the western side of Ou Kaapse Weg, will welcome visitors once again. This area encompasses the picturesque Silvermine Dam, the popular Elephant’s Eye trail, and the serene Silvermine Riverwalk, all celebrated for their beautiful fynbos landscapes and panoramic vistas. The reopening marks a crucial step in the park’s recovery, allowing renewed enjoyment of some of the region's premier hiking experiences.
Further expanding access, Upper Tokai is slated to reopen on September 1, 2025, including Levels 4 and 5. These levels had been closed since July due to unstable terrain caused by heavy rainfall. However, SANParks has advised that a specific section of the road, from the Silvermine boom gate to the junction of Level 4 and 5, will remain inaccessible to cyclists as essential rehabilitation work continues. Additionally, the Donkey Trail, connecting Silvermine to Upper Tokai, and the Level 1 and 2 Jeep tracks, designated for horseback riders, will remain closed indefinitely due to severe rain damage.
Regarding facilities, visitors will find temporary ablution amenities available at the entrance gate and near the western side of the dam. This is a temporary measure while the burnt facilities near the dam parking area undergo reconstruction. The popular uThango braai area will also remain closed, with its reopening anticipated in December 2025, contingent upon the completion of ongoing infrastructure restoration efforts.
SANParks strongly emphasizes that, even where some trails may appear visually unaffected, access is being restricted in specific areas. This is a critical measure to ensure both user safety and to support vital ecological restoration initiatives across the park. Public safety remains the utmost priority, and all trail users are urged to strictly adhere to all signage, area closures, and instructions provided by rangers. Visitors must remain vigilant and consistently stick to designated paths to safeguard themselves and aid the recovering natural environment.
To facilitate a safe return for visitors, SANParks is actively conducting Safety Awareness Campaigns. The organization has expressed its deep appreciation for the public’s patience and cooperation throughout the restoration process, underscoring the importance of responsible recreation in preserving the park’s natural beauty for future generations. This phased reopening signifies the resilience of Table Mountain National Park and the dedicated efforts of conservation teams committed to restoring the area, offering renewed opportunities for nature-based tourism and outdoor activities within one of Africa's most iconic urban parks.
