Super Eagles Triumph: Nigeria Secures AFCON Semi-Final After Decisive Victory Over Algeria

The Nigeria Super Eagles delivered a commanding and composed performance against Algeria in the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, securing a decisive 2-0 victory at the Stade de Marrakech. This triumph not only booked their place in the semi-finals but also firmly established them as genuine title contenders, silencing any pre-match expectations of a stern challenge from the North Africans.
Goals from two enigmatic forwards, Victor Osimhen in the 47th minute and Akor Adams just 10 minutes later, were enough to dispatch Vladimir Petkovic's Fennec Foxes. The first half saw Nigeria dominate possession, holding as much as 68 percent of the ball and creating several clear-cut chances. Ademola Lookman's low shot was held by Algeria's goalkeeper Luca Zidane, Calvin Bassey's effort was cleared off the goal line, and Jerome Akor missed a golden opportunity after a defensive lapse. Despite their overwhelming dominance, Nigeria went into the break without a goal. However, they returned with renewed intensity and clarity in the second half, overwhelming Algeria with their tactical prowess and clinical finishing.
A more mature Victor Osimhen emerged as a key figure in the victory. After facing criticism for his reaction in a previous match, the Galatasaray striker responded spectacularly by scoring, assisting, and leading the team. Beyond his goal involvement, Osimhen displayed remarkable composure and leadership, even taking on the captain's armband when Wilfred Ndidi was substituted due to a knock. This evolution from Osimhen the scorer to Osimhen the leader is a crucial development as the tournament progresses to its final stages.
Nigeria's full-backs, Bruno Onyemaechi and Bright Osayi-Samuel, were outstanding on both ends of the pitch. Onyemaechi delivered an inch-perfect cross from the left flank for Osimhen's opening goal, demonstrating the kind of service strikers dream of. On the right, Bright Osayi-Samuel relentlessly stretched Algeria's defense, ensuring the pitch remained wide and uncomfortable for their opponents. Defensively, the Birmingham City player won 70 percent of his duels and was the most fouled player, a clear indication of the trouble he caused. His impressive performance has turned a potential weakness, given the sidelining of Ola Aina and Benjamin Frederick due to injury, into a significant strength for the Super Eagles.
At the heart of Nigeria's rhythm was Alex Iwobi, the quiet conductor. While he may not always grab the headlines, his influence was immense. His precise pass to Onyemaechi initiated the move for the first goal, and his line-breaking ball released Osimhen for the second. These two decisive sequences, which didn't register as assists on paper, showcased his control and intelligence, proving that these qualities often matter more than mere statistics.
The transformation of the squad is most evident under Coach Eric Chelle's structure. Players like Iwobi, who faced criticism in previous tournaments, are now flourishing. Chelle's tactical approach has unlocked balance within the team, with players like Lookman, Osimhen, Akor Adams, Calvin Bassey, and Iwobi thriving within clearly defined roles. Crucially, the bench now offers effective solutions rather than causing panic, indicating that Nigeria has evolved into a well-oiled system rather than a team reliant on individual moments.
Nigeria's dominance over Algeria sent a clear message to the rest of the continent. Despite the historical intensity of Nigeria-Algeria showdowns, this match passed with surprising calm, largely due to Nigeria's authoritative control. Up until the 75th minute, Algeria failed to register a single shot, on or off target, a testament to Nigeria's defensive discipline and high pressing game which frustrated Algerian captain Riyad Mahrez. The Super Eagles expertly married defensive solidity with attacking intent, proving they can win games with both flair and control, leaving no doubt about their title ambitions.
The impressive victory garnered widespread national acclaim, with top political figures extending their congratulations. President Bola Tinubu described the team's display as
