Super Eagles Roar into AFCON Semis with Decisive 2-0 Victory Over Algeria!

The Super Eagles of Nigeria triumphantly advanced to the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, securing a dominant 2-0 victory over their long-standing rivals, Algeria, in a fiercely contested quarter-final match on Saturday at the Grand Stade de Marrakech.
The stage was set for a crucial encounter between two of Africa's most respected football nations, known for their tension-filled meetings over the years. Nigeria entered the match with high confidence, having delivered a convincing 4-0 win against Mozambique in the Round of 16. Their attack, spearheaded by Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, showcased speed, strength, and sharp finishing. Algeria, after a perfect group stage run, had to overcome DR Congo in extra time in the last round, demonstrating their patience and fighting spirit with experienced players capable of managing big matches.
Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle named a strong starting XI for the clash, featuring Stanley Nwabali in goal, protected by a defensive line of Bright Osayi-Samuel, Semi Ajayi, Calvin Bassey, and Bruno Onyemaechi. The midfield trio comprised captain Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi, and Frank Onyeka, all accustomed to the demands of high-stakes games. Upfront, Victor Osimhen led the attack, supported by Ademola Lookman and Akor Adams, promising pace, movement, and goals. The bench boasted formidable options, including Samuel Chukwueze, Chidera Ejuke, Moses Simon, and Paul Onuachu, among others.
The match kicked off with Nigeria displaying immediate confidence and energy, pressing high and forcing Algeria into early mistakes. The Super Eagles dominated possession and territory within the opening 15 minutes, with Lookman and Adams creating problems down the flanks. Algeria struggled to settle, relying mainly on long balls, but Nigeria's defense, expertly marshalled by Semi Ajayi and Calvin Bassey, remained impenetrable, leaving Stanley Nwabali largely untroubled. Nigeria created better chances before the break, with Adams missing a clear opportunity and both Lookman and Osimhen testing goalkeeper Luca Zidane. A VAR check for a possible Nigerian goal added drama, but the first half concluded scoreless despite Nigeria's clear dominance.
The breakthrough came swiftly in the second half. Just two minutes after the restart, Bruno Onyemaechi delivered a precise cross from the left flank. Victor Osimhen, timing his run to perfection, guided a calm header past Zidane, giving Nigeria a deserved lead. The goal invigorated the Super Eagles, who continued to press forward with renewed confidence. Algeria attempted to respond with tactical substitutions, introducing fresh legs like Baghdad Bounedjah and Riyad Mahrez, but Nigeria maintained their organized and alert defensive shape.
In the 57th minute, Nigeria extended their advantage with a beautifully executed team goal. Alex Iwobi split the Algerian defense with a clever pass to Osimhen, who unselfishly squared the ball for Akor Adams. The striker confidently rounded the goalkeeper and calmly slotted the ball into the net, making it 2-0. From this point, Nigeria was firmly in control. Wilfred Ndidi and Frank Onyeka worked tirelessly in midfield, breaking up play and dictating the tempo, while Bassey made a crucial recovery run to deny Mohamed Amoura a clear chance. Akor Adams nearly added a third goal, hitting the bar with a header late in the game, and substitute Fisayo Dele-Bashiru helped Nigeria manage the closing stages effectively. Algeria's desperate attempts to find a goal were expertly dealt with by Nigeria's resilient defense.
At full-time, the Super Eagles celebrated a memorable victory that underscored their growing confidence in the tournament. President Bola Tinubu promptly congratulated the team via his verified X handle, @officialABAT, praising their performance and urging them to remain focused as they advance. He reiterated, “Go, Super Eagles! You have the support of all Nigerians.” Algeria’s head coach, Vladimir Petković, acknowledged Nigeria's superiority in his post-match interview, stating, “Nigeria was better than us. We wanted to control the game, but the opponent was strong and prevented us from doing so. The Nigerian players demonstrated their individual abilities, and we were lacking physically.”
The victory means Nigeria will now face tournament hosts Morocco in one of the highly anticipated semi-final matches. This assured display strengthens Nigeria's belief as they continue their push for a fourth continental title in AFCON 2025.
