Super Eagles Gear Up for Crucial Benin Clash as World Cup Hopes Hang in Balance

The 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification in CAF Group C is set for a dramatic conclusion on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, as Nigeria's Super Eagles, the Republic of Benin's Cheetahs, and South Africa's Bafana Bafana vie for a single automatic qualifying spot. All three nations face high-stakes matches simultaneously, with their destinies hanging in the balance.
For the Super Eagles of Nigeria, coached by Eric Chelle, the path to the Mundial requires a victory against Gernot Rohr's Benin at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo. Nigeria currently sits third in Group C with 14 points, and a win alone will not guarantee qualification. They must also hope that Rwanda either defeats or holds South Africa to a draw in their concurrent match. The Super Eagles recently secured a 2-1 victory over Lesotho, boosting their points tally.
The Cheetahs of Benin, currently leading Group C with 17 points, are in the most favorable position. A win against Nigeria would secure their historic qualification for the FIFA World Cup, regardless of other results. Even a draw could potentially see them through if Rwanda manages to hold South Africa. Benin's form under former Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr has been impressive, with three wins in their last five games, all within the qualifying series. They notably caused an upset by defeating Nigeria 2-1 in the reverse fixture in March 2024, their first-ever competitive win against the Super Eagles.
South Africa, positioned second in the group with 15 points, also faces a must-win scenario against Rwanda at the Mbombela Stadium. Their qualification hopes were significantly impacted by a three-point deduction from FIFA for fielding an ineligible player, Teboho Mokoena, against Lesotho. This penalty has fueled doubts among fans and even within the team, as goalkeeper Ronwen Hayden Williams expressed concerns. Despite this, Williams, the AFCON 2023 golden glove winner, remains optimistic, drawing parallels to a past experience at Mbombela where they missed out on the 2013 AFCON due to a technicality. He sees this as a chance to
