Super Eagles Face Lesotho in Crucial World Cup Qualifier: High Stakes & Bold Claims

The Super Eagles of Nigeria are poised for a pivotal encounter against Lesotho in a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier. This match, along with a subsequent fixture against Benin Republic, is considered must-win for Nigeria to keep their qualification aspirations alive after a faltering campaign. The Super Eagles, currently sitting third in CAF Qualification Group C with 11 points (from two wins, five draws, and one defeat in eight matches), find themselves trailing group leaders Benin and second-placed South Africa.
The highly anticipated clash is scheduled for Friday, kicking off at 5:00 p.m. Nigerian time (6:00 p.m. local time), and will take place at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, Pietersburg, South Africa. Fans can follow the game live on SuperSport Football, SuperSport Variety, NTA Sports, or through Soccernet.ng's live updates, as well as FIFA+.
Head coach Eric Chelle has emphasized the dire need for total focus, intensity, and mental sharpness from his players. Speaking ahead of the game, Chelle acknowledged the unpredictable nature of football, stating, "Everybody can go to the World Cup. This is football — anything can happen during the game because of the weather, the referee, injuries, or other factors. So, we need to stay focused on what we want from this game." He urged the team to start strong, play with aggression, and seize their chances against a well-organized Lesotho side, cautioning against underestimating the "great team with a good coach."
Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong echoed his coach's sentiments, calling for discipline and sustained focus. He acknowledged Lesotho's commendable performance in the group, including their 1-1 draw against Nigeria in November 2023, and stressed the importance of approaching the game with respect but unwavering determination to secure all three points. "It’s important for us to go for all three points. We have to show Lesotho respect — they’ve done well in the group and have picked up points against us also," Troost-Ekong remarked.
The Nigerian camp, opened in South Africa, sees key stars like Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Alex Iwobi, and Wilfred Ndidi expected to play pivotal roles. Despite injuries to Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Ola Aina, Cyriel Dessers, and Felix Agu, Coach Chelle has named a strong starting lineup. Stanley Nwabali will guard the goal, with a defensive line featuring Benjamin Fredrick (operating as right-back due to injuries, despite being a center-back), Calvin Bassey, William Troost-Ekong, and Bruno Onyemaechi. The midfield will be marshaled by Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi, Moses Simon, and Ademola Lookman, with Victor Osimhen and Tolu Arokodare leading the attack, indicating an aggressive, width-spreading strategy to overwhelm Lesotho's defense.
From Lesotho's camp, both head coach Leslie Notši and captain Sekhoane Moerane expressed confidence and readiness. Coach Notši confirmed a clean bill of health for his squad, with no serious injuries, and acknowledged Nigeria as one of the continent's best teams with players in top European leagues. However, he expressed optimism and a desire to frustrate Nigeria, aiming to replicate the 1-1 draw from their last encounter. "We believe, we have an opportunity to continue where we left off in our last match in November 2023," Notši stated.
Captain Moerane reinforced this resolve, declaring that his team would not be intimidated by Nigeria's star power. "Going into the game, we are not going to show fear because one thing we have to do, is not to fear our opponents but we should give them respect," Moerane said, emphasizing pride and commitment to their country, Basotho. Despite their World Cup qualification hopes being non-existent (currently 5th in Group C with nine points and a -3 goal difference), Lesotho is determined to make a statement on home soil and end their campaign on a high note. Historically, Nigeria has won two of their three previous encounters against Lesotho in the past six years, with one draw.
