Super Eagles Roar: Nigeria Prepares for Epic 2026 World Cup Qualifier Against Benin

The race for qualification in Group C of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers is intensifying, with Benin Republic emerging as a strong contender. The Cheetahs, under the guidance of former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr, currently hold the top spot in Group C with 17 points from nine matches, following their crucial 1-0 victory over Rwanda in Amahoro on Friday. Forward Tosin Aiyegun scored the winning goal ten minutes from time, a result that puts Benin in a favorable position to qualify for the World Cup for the first time in their history.
Benin Republic's players are anticipating a tough challenge against the Super Eagles of Nigeria but are determined to give their all. Tosin Aiyegun emphasized the difficulty of the upcoming match, stating, “It won’t be easy there, but that’s football. We dreamed of playing a great match. Now it’s against Nigeria. We have to give it our all.” Similarly, team captain Steve Mounie echoed this sentiment, declaring their commitment: “We play football for this kind of match. It will be a historic meeting. We will give everything to take Benin to the World Cup.”
The crucial match against Nigeria is scheduled for Tuesday at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo. The Benin Republic delegation is expected to arrive in Uyo on Saturday afternoon, flying directly from Kigali. For Benin, a win against Nigeria would automatically secure their qualification, irrespective of other results in the group. However, anything less could open the door for South Africa or Nigeria to overtake them.
Gernot Rohr, familiar with Nigerian football from his tenure as Super Eagles head coach, highlighted some of Nigeria's key players. He acknowledged the threat posed by talents like Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Moses Simon, and Alex Iwobi. Despite this, he expressed confidence in his team, noting, “This result builds confidence.”
However, Benin will face Nigeria without two key players due to suspension: Yohan Roche and Sessi D’Almeida. Both received yellow cards in the match against Rwanda; D’Almeida for a rash challenge and Roche for time-wasting. Rohr acknowledged these absences, stating, “We have lost two players (for the match against Nigeria) as a result of a second yellow card. But all is possible for the three teams (South Africa, Benin and Nigeria).” Nigeria will also be missing Ademola Lookman due to suspension.
Meanwhile, the Super Eagles of Nigeria are also in a critical position. Nigeria secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Lesotho on matchday nine. Head coach Eric Chelle praised Sevilla striker Akor Adams, who came off the bench to score Nigeria's second goal. Chelle also spoke of the strong camaraderie and competitive spirit within the Nigerian dressing room. Nigeria's position in Group C remains challenging, as they trail South Africa by a single point ahead of the final round of fixtures. A victory against Benin is essential for Nigeria, and they will also need Rwanda to take points off South Africa to boost their qualification hopes. The atmosphere is calm and filled with mutual respect, but the players are driven by their competitive spirit and ambition, recognizing the victory as "the most important outcome of the night." The Super Eagles are grateful for the opportunity to continue fighting for qualification on home soil.
