Sunil Mittal's Ambitious Vision: Airtel's Quest for a Billion Digital Users by 2025

Bharti Airtel founder and Chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal outlined an ambitious vision for his company and India's future at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit 2025. Speaking with former G20 Sherpa and CEO of NITI Aayog, Amitabh Kant, Mittal expressed his goal of making Airtel the first company globally to reach one billion customers within the next eight to ten years, a significant increase from its current 600 million users. This global expansion strategy includes a substantial move in the UK, where Airtel has secured a 25% stake in British Telecom, with an eye on acquiring more European assets, complementing its existing operations in Africa.
Mittal's entrepreneurial journey began early, at the age of 18 in April 1976, with a modest ₹20,000 loan from his father. Today, his net worth stands at an impressive $34.2 billion, approximately ₹3 lakh crore. Reflecting on Airtel's future, he emphasized the company's evolution beyond a traditional telecom operator, aiming to transform it into a leading global digital services provider. Mittal highlighted the critical necessity of a sovereign cloud in the current geopolitical landscape, advocating against sole reliance on major tech giants like Google and Microsoft to ensure data security and national strategic independence.
The Chairman also spoke with confidence about India's economic prospects, asserting that the nation possesses enough "animal spirit" to achieve its goal of becoming a developed economy by 2047. He echoed the RBI governor's sentiment, describing India as being in a "Goldilocks zone" ripe for leveraging its potential to reach a $22-25 trillion economy. Mittal underscored the importance of swiftly concluding all trade deals to fully harness India's capabilities on the global stage.
Addressing the intense competition in the telecom sector, Mittal acknowledged that Airtel had to contend with a particularly disruptive player, in a veiled reference to Reliance Jio, which launched in 2016. He attributed Airtel's survival and growth amidst market consolidation, which saw 6-7 companies disappear, to the exceptional talent and dedication of its people. Furthermore, Mittal shared insights into Airtel's challenging experience in Africa, where the initial ten years were "very hard." Despite entering with a proven playbook of low-cost and massive expansion, it took 6-7 years to effectively "crack the market" there.
Mittal also recounted a pivotal moment in Airtel's history: how a government advertisement in 1992, which he serendipitously encountered during a vacation in Goa, changed everything. Prior to this, his company was involved in manufacturing and selling Beetel fixed-line phones with operations primarily in Mumbai. This advertisement led Airtel to clinch a license to operate as a telecom provider, marking the true genesis of the company as it is known today.
The Hindustan Times Leadership Summit 2025, a flagship event of the Hindustan Times Group, is themed "Transforming Tomorrow," embodying innovation, resilience, and reinvention. The summit features a distinguished lineup of speakers including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, CJI Justice Surya Kant, EAM S. Jaishankar, Sunil Bharti Mittal himself, along with various chief ministers, prominent academics, and personalities from the entertainment and sports sectors.
