The domestic box office recently saw"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" nearing an all-time record, but much of the notable activity occurred outside the top spots.
Ridley Scott's sci-fi film "The Dog Stars" struggled in its second weekend, barely staying in the top 10 with approximately $3 million.
The new releases "Onslaught" from director Adam Wingard and "Fall 2: Deadpoint" debuted outside the top 10, grossing around $2 million and $2.7 million respectively.
Amidst this landscape, the action movie "Mutiny," starring Jason Statham, passed a significant domestic box office milestone.
It surpassed the $13.8 million lifetime haul of Statham's other 2026 release, "Shelter," signaling its transition to the PVOD (Premium Video On Demand) market.
This pattern is characteristic for Statham, whose films often find their primary audience at home, with theatrical runs serving as promotional tools.
Despite his success in the home video market, Statham has never starred in a movie released directly to home video.
"Mutiny," directed by Jean-François Richet, follows Cole Reed (Statham), a man falsely accused of murder who must uncover an international conspiracy while aboard a ship.
The film also features Annabelle Wallis. It garnered mixed critical reception, holding a 50% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes, with the consensus noting its "bounty of crunchy carnage that Jason Statham serves with characteristic finesse," but also criticizing its "convoluted plotting, and an unrelentingly grim tone."
However, audiences responded more positively, giving it an 86% score. The movie faced an early setback when it was accidentally uploaded to Prime Video prior to its official release, leading to its dissemination on illegal file-sharing platforms.
Despite this, "Mutiny" has domestically passed the $15 million mark against a reported budget of $40 million. Statham is slated to star in "The Beekeeper 2" next year, hoping to strengthen his big-screen presence.
