Startup Spotlight: HCLTech Acquires Belgium's Wobby in $5.2M Deal
HCLSoftware, the dedicated software division of IT powerhouse HCLTech, has announced its strategic acquisition of Wobby, an Antwerp-based startup renowned for its specialization in AI data analyst agents. This all-cash deal, valued at $5.2 million (€4.5 million), represents a significant step in HCL's ongoing initiative to integrate "Agentic AI"—autonomous systems capable of sophisticated reasoning and task execution—directly into its comprehensive enterprise data stack. Wobby's core offering includes AI data analyst 'Agents' that empower users to interact with complex datasets using natural language, enabling the instant retrieval of actionable insights.
The acquisition, anticipated to be finalized by February 2026, is specifically designed to enhance HCL's Actian Data Intelligence Platform. It aims to broaden the platform's capabilities, particularly in areas such as metadata management, data cataloging, and robust data governance solutions. A company statement emphasized that the addition of Agentic AI Data Analyst capabilities will further enable customers to engage with their raw data, securing rapid and precise business insights on demand. Wobby's solution is built on a proprietary semantic layer and an agentic architecture, which intelligently interprets business context, automates intricate workflows, and delivers high-quality analytical output at scale, thereby complementing the knowledge graph functionalities of the Actian Data Intelligence Platform.
Marc Potter, CEO of Actian and Portfolio General Manager of HCLSoftware’s Data & AI division, articulated the customer demand for "self-service analytics with AI-driven insights that they can trust." He added that with Wobby, Actian will provide LLM-powered natural-language analytics atop a unified, governed semantic layer, fostering self-service analytics that yield context-rich, accurate insights and establish a solid foundation for confidently scaling GenAI initiatives. Amra Dorjbayar, CEO and Co-Founder of Wobby, expressed optimism that combining Wobby’s capabilities with the Actian Data Intelligence platform will present customers with a distinctive approach to data management.
This acquisition of Wobby closely follows another major strategic move by HCLTech: the substantial $160 million buyout of Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s (HPE) Telco Solutions business. While the Wobby acquisition is characterized as a tactical "acqui-hire" aimed at fostering early-stage GenAI innovation, the HPE deal is a larger-scale asset carve-out strategically positioned to establish dominance in the burgeoning 5G and autonomous networking segments. This latest transaction with HPE builds upon a previous agreement in 2024, further enabling HCLTech to acquire industry-leading intellectual property (IP), invaluable product engineering and R&D talent, and strengthened client relationships with top global Communication Service Providers (CSPs).
The Telco Solutions business was formerly a component of HPE's Communications Technology Group (CTG). The previously acquired CTG portfolio, which encompassed Business Support Systems (BSS), network applications, service cloudification, and data intelligence, has been successfully integrated into HCLTech's operations and is now demonstrating sustained growth. These dual acquisitions underscore HCL's multifaceted strategy to expand its technological prowess and market footprint across both cutting-edge AI innovations and critical telecommunications infrastructure.
