Toronto Raptors star Kawhi Leonard is set to miss several weeks of play due to swelling in his left knee, as reported by sources close to ESPN. An MRI conducted on Leonard's knee confirmed that there is no structural damage, and the anticipated downtime will be utilized for his rehabilitation and a gradual ramp-up to full activity. This injury comes after an unusual offseason for the 35-year-old forward, whose ability to join the Raptors was delayed until the resolution of the NBA's investigation into the LA Clippers' salary cap circumvention case.
Leonard publicly expressed his frustration regarding the missed time, stating on X, "Yeah, it's always frustrating missing time. I came back to compete with this team and I'm focused on getting back to 100. Toronto, I've appreciated the love since I've been back. Returning soon." The team has announced that Leonard will be reevaluated in one week.
While this current setback involves his left knee, Leonard has a documented history of knee issues, having undergone multiple surgeries for his meniscus and ACL on his right knee in the past. He missed his first game of the season on Sunday due to the same knee swelling. In the two games he has played this season, Leonard has been averaging 19.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 3.5 steals.
This marks Leonard's first season back with the Toronto Raptors, following a trade from the Clippers this offseason after a scandal-marred conclusion to his six-season tenure there. Upon his return, he agreed to a two-year, $115 million contract extension with the team. Leonard previously played one season for the Raptors in 2019, famously leading them to their only NBA championship before departing for the Clippers in free agency.
