Violent Political Attack: Thugs Ambush APC Convoy, Leaving Many Injured in Katsina

Suspected political thugs launched an attack on Wednesday against vehicles transporting supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Malumfashi Local Government Area of Katsina State. The incident left several individuals with minor injuries and caused significant damage to vehicles. The supporters were en route to Funtua to attend the flag-off ceremony for Governor Malam Dikko Umaru Radda’s re-election campaign, which is set for the 2027 general elections.

The perpetrators, described as hoodlums, were observed chanting “Ba mu yi,” a Hausa expression signifying “We do not agree,” as they reportedly hurled various objects and stones at passing vehicles. This aggressive act resulted in shattered windscreens and windows, creating a scene of panic among motorists and passengers on the road. A correspondent travelling along the affected route narrowly avoided the assault when a police officer temporarily halted their vehicle, diverting them from the targeted attacks which also impacted some vehicles within the governor’s convoy.

Prompt intervention by law enforcement authorities, including police officers stationed along the route, was crucial in preventing further escalation. The officers swiftly responded by deploying tear gas to disperse the aggressive crowd and restore order. This action allowed motorists and party supporters to resume their journeys, although the incident temporarily disrupted traffic flow as security personnel worked to clear the area and mitigate the risk of additional attacks. Following the restoration of calm, it was noted that some victims had sustained minor injuries, and numerous vehicles bore visible damage from the shattered glass.

Despite the unsettling disturbance in Malumfashi, thousands of enthusiastic APC supporters successfully converged in Funtua for the campaign flag-off. The venue transformed into a vibrant display of party colours, filled with an excited crowd from various parts of Katsina State. Attendees sang solidarity songs and chanted slogans in fervent support of Governor Radda and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, underscoring their commitment to the party’s objectives ahead of the 2027 elections. Supporters actively waved APC flags and showcased campaign materials featuring images of both leaders, demonstrating their resolve to build grassroots support.

The massive turnout at the Funtua rally highlighted the political significance of the event as the APC intensifies its preparations for the upcoming general elections. However, the attack in Malumfashi has inevitably sparked renewed concerns regarding political intolerance and the safety of individuals travelling to participate in campaign activities. As of the time this report was filed, the identities, political affiliations, and precise motives of the attackers remained unestablished. Furthermore, there was no immediate official confirmation of any arrests made or a statement released by the Katsina State Police Command concerning the incident.
