Spurs Splash £100 Million: Tonali Completes Blockbuster Move to Tottenham
Tottenham Hotspur has completed the club-record signing of midfielder Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United for a fee potentially reaching £100 million. Tonali expressed immense happiness and anticipation for his new chapter, following a significant tenure at Newcastle which included a Carabao Cup win and overcoming a betting ban. His move marks another high-profile transfer for Spurs alongside Mateus Fernandes.
Tottenham Hotspur has officially announced the signing of midfielder Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United in a deal that could reach a club-record fee of £100 million. The 26-year-old joins the London club after spending three seasons with the Magpies. Tottenham's initial bid of approximately £80 million was reportedly rejected by Newcastle, but an agreement was eventually reached for an initial payment of £92.5 million, with an additional £7.5 million in add-ons.
Tonali expressed his excitement about the move, stating, “I’m very happy to be here.” He clarified that despite rumors of interest from multiple clubs, Tottenham was his sole choice. He recounted a nearly two-hour conversation with head coach Roberto de Zerbi, discussing various aspects of the club, including the fans, the stadium, and the team's style of play. This conversation, he noted, felt “like magic” and solidified his decision to sign for Tottenham. Having played against Tottenham previously, Tonali recalled the “great atmosphere made by great fans” and eagerly anticipates the start of the season.
This significant acquisition follows another major signing for Spurs, Mateus Fernandes, who transferred from West Ham for £85 million. Italy international Tonali originally joined Newcastle from AC Milan in July 2023 for a fee of £55 million. Shortly after his arrival, he faced a 10-month ban from the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) due to breaching betting rules. However, upon his return, he became a crucial player for Newcastle, helping them secure the Carabao Cup in 2025, marking the club's first trophy in 70 years.
In a heartfelt social media post, Tonali bid farewell to Newcastle United, expressing the difficulty of finding the right words to say goodbye to the Magpies and manager Eddie Howe. He extended his gratitude to the club's fans for their unwavering support, and thanked the staff and his teammates for their belief and help in his development. Tonali specifically acknowledged Eddie Howe as a “real guiding figure” who always supported him throughout his journey. He concluded by stating that the city of Newcastle had given him more than just football, providing him with a home, unforgettable moments, and people for whom he will always be grateful.
