South Africa's Tourism Sector Soars with Double-Digit Growth!

South Africa's tourism sector experienced a robust recovery in the first half of 2026, according to figures released by the Department of Tourism. International tourist arrivals saw a significant increase of 12.3% when compared to the corresponding period in the previous year. Between January and June 2026, the country welcomed a total of 5,584,473 international tourists, demonstrating sustained growth across both its regional and overseas markets.

This impressive growth was primarily driven by a substantial 14.3% rise in arrivals from the African continent. Concurrently, overseas arrivals also showed positive momentum, increasing by 5.6%, which further underscores South Africa's enduring appeal to a global audience. The month of June alone contributed significantly to these figures, recording 823,365 international tourists, representing a 9.8% year-on-year increase. During June, tourist arrivals from Africa climbed by 12.1% compared with June 2025.

For the second consecutive month in June, the United States maintained its position as South Africa's leading overseas source market, with 40,566 American visitors choosing to travel to the country during that period.

Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille attributed these positive outcomes to the government's strategic efforts to diversify the nation's tourism offerings and reinforce its partnerships with both the industry and international markets. She emphasized that the deliberate decision to broaden tourism products is yielding positive results. Minister de Lille further stated that the consistent growth in both regional and overseas arrivals reflects the inherent resilience of South Africa's tourism sector and validates the effectiveness of the collaborative partnerships forged with the industry and international stakeholders.

Looking ahead, Minister de Lille affirmed the government's commitment to further strengthening these partnerships through joint marketing initiatives across the African continent. Simultaneously, efforts will be made to expand South Africa's presence in key strategic overseas markets. She reiterated that the latest figures underscore the government's dedication to enhancing ease of access for travellers, expanding crucial air connectivity, and strategically positioning South Africa as a premier destination for both leisure and business travel.
