For the first time ever, South Africa is set to host a round of the prestigious  in Sun City, North West Province, marking a major milestone for the country’s motorsport industry. The  will run from , attracting top competitors from 28 countries in a thrilling off-road racing spectacle.

Archie Rutherford, CEO of , described the event as the biggest motorsport occasion in South Africa since the .

“This is a massive event, a true showcase for South Africa,” Rutherford said during an interview on Sports on Morning Live“Motorsport enthusiasts, the FIA, FIM, and fans from around the world will be here. It’s going to be huge.”

Organizing the rally presented significant hurdles, particularly due to  in the North West Province. Rutherford credited local farmers and communities for their crucial support in preparing the route.

“We’ve crossed over 100 different farms and territories, with more than 100 people working on the route since January,” he explained. “Without their cooperation, this race wouldn’t be possible.”

Unlike traditional desert-based rally raids, the South African leg will challenge drivers with rugged , offering a unique test for international competitors.

South African racer Saood Variawa, who will compete in the event, expressed excitement about racing on home soil.

“Our local knowledge gives us an edge,” Variawa said. “International drivers are used to open deserts, but here, they’ll face tight bush tracks with trees and bushes scraping their cars—it’s a different kind of challenge.”

Variawa highlighted , a rally-raid legend, as one of his toughest competitors but remained confident in his preparation.

With FIA officials, including the federation’s president, attending the event, Rutherford believes a successful rally could boost South Africa’s chances of hosting  again.

“If we put our best foot forward, we can prove South Africa is capable of hosting major motorsport events,” he said. “Who knows? Maybe F1 will return soon.”

The  kicks off on May 18 in Sun City, featuring a grueling course through the North West’s challenging landscapes. Fans can expect high-speed action, unpredictable conditions, and fierce competition as local and international drivers battle for victory.

As the world’s eyes turn to South Africa, this historic event could mark the beginning of a new era for African motorsport.
