Shocking 'John Wick' Revelation: Keanu Reeves Replaced!
Keanu Reeves, known for his iconic role as John Wick, is embarking on a new action thriller franchise with "Kill Current: A Jon Hendricks Thriller." He will star as a CIA burnout seeking revenge in a globe-spanning story, a project poised to redefine geopolitical thrillers and launch Reeves' new production banner, Two Dragonflies.
Keanu Reeves, widely recognized for his portrayal of John Wick over the past decade, has been instrumental in transforming the franchise from an indie success into a beloved global blockbuster. Despite the seemingly definitive conclusion of John Wick: Chapter 4, which featured a climactic confrontation with Caine and the Marquis de Gramont, CinemaCon in 2025 confirmed that the saga would continue with a fifth installment, following Reeves and director Chad Stahelski's agreement on a compelling new concept.
While the highly anticipated fifth John Wick film is still some time away, Reeves has officially secured his next major action thriller project. The Arena, an independent studio, has preemptively acquired the adaptation rights to Oliver Lowe’s forthcoming novel, "Kill Current: A Jon Hendricks Thriller." Reeves is set to star as the titular character, a disillusioned CIA operative, and will also produce the film alongside Alexandra Grant under their production banner, Two Dragonflies.
"Kill Current" is described as a "globe-spanning, edge-of-your-seat action thriller about shifting alliances and the race for the world’s most precious and valuable assets." The novel is intended to launch a series centered on Jon Hendricks, positioning it as a potential new franchise for Reeves. Publishing in May 2027 through Zando, the book is a revenge thriller reminiscent of John Wick, introducing Hendricks as he is drawn back into the world of espionage to avenge the death of his protégé.
The narrative promises a complex journey for the beaten-down CIA officer, filled with globe-trotting political thrills. Molly Stern, CEO and founder of Zando, highlighted the novel's contemporary relevance in an official statement: “Oliver Lowe’s masterful story, the first in his upcoming Jon Hendricks series, is poised to reinvent the geopolitical thriller for the modern era. Kill Current is rooted in the issues shaping today’s world—semiconductors, global supply chains, technological and information warfare. It delivers the fast-paced, globe-trotting read and complex, intriguing characters that thriller fans of any era crave.” A first teaser, showing Hendricks walking through a cybernetic corridor, was released alongside the announcement.
This project aligns perfectly with The Arena's mission, as launched by Erik Feig, to produce event action and high-concept franchises. Feig stated, “This project further underlines our focus on launching high-concept IP for global audiences across different media. Keanu Reeves is a singular talent and synonymous with the kind of intelligent action franchises we are aiming to make. We are thrilled to work with him and Alexandra Grant.”
Reeves himself expressed enthusiasm for the venture, noting that this type of project was precisely what he and Grant envisioned when they conceived Two Dragonflies. “I’m excited and grateful for the opportunity to develop the character Jon Hendricks with these wonderful collaborators, and that this is the project that launches Two Dragonflies, which I share with my partner, Alexandra Grant.”
