North West ADC Governorship Candidates Sign Security and Development Compact
The African Democratic Convention (ADC) governorship candidates in Nigeria's North Western states have signed "Compact 2027–2031," outlining their commitment to address pervasive insecurity, underdevelopment, and poverty if elected. Former Attorney General Abubakar Malami highlighted severe challenges including widespread killings, kidnappings, abandoned farmlands, and a high percentage of out-of-school children, blaming the current administrations for mismanaging N8.33 trillion in federal allocations. The candidates pledged to restore fuel subsidies, implement a N110,000 minimum wage, and introduce a comprehensive blueprint for security, education, health, and infrastructure.Governorship candidates of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) across the seven North Western states have signed “Compact 2027–2031”, a regional covenant focused on security, development and shared prosperity if they win the 2027 elections.
The agreement was unveiled at the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja on Wednesday, coinciding with the official start of governorship and State Houses of Assembly campaigns under the Independent National Electoral Commission’s timetable. The signatories are the ADC candidates for Kebbi, Sokoto, Jigawa, Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna and Kano, with some represented by their running mates.
Speaking on behalf of the candidates, former Attorney General of the Federation and Kebbi governorship candidate Abubakar Malami, SAN, highlighted the scale of insecurity confronting the region.
He said more than 16,000 people had been killed between June 2023 and August 2026, while over 1,583 kidnapping incidents since January 2023 had displaced more than 10,000 people from their homes and farms.
Malami also linked insecurity to abandoned farmland, food insecurity and education challenges, noting that the North West accounts for 45 percent of Nigeria’s out-of-school children.
Malami further questioned how the region’s public resources have been used, saying North West states and local governments received more than N8.33 trillion in federal allocations between June 2023 and August 2026.
He argued that the funds had not translated into adequate improvements in transportation, food, healthcare, education and general living conditions, while accusing the current APC-led administrations of widespread looting.
The ADC candidates pledged to use governance and public resources more deliberately to address insecurity, restore normalcy, and deliver measurable improvements in the lives of residents.
