Shocking Discipline: Parents Defend Forcing Son, 9, To Do Squats As 'Corrective Parenting'

Dustin, 35, and Katie Maletich, 32, from Oregon, have defended their unconventional parenting technique after a TikTok video of them disciplining their nine-year-old son, Tommy, went viral. The video, shared under the username @raisingmaletich, showed Dustin instructing Tommy to perform 20 push-ups and 60 squats as punishment for telling his mother, Katie, to 'chill' during an argument over phone usage. The incident, captured by an at-home camera, depicted Tommy arguing with his mother, who then told him to stop, prompting his 'OK, chill' remark. This response immediately prompted Dustin to intervene, demanding the physical exercises.
Despite Tommy's initial struggle to complete the push-ups and his exhaustion after the full set, Dustin insisted he continue, then added 60 squats to the punishment. After completing the exercises, Dustin explained to his son, "Do we tell mum to 'chill out'? Absolutely not. I wouldn't let anybody else talk to her like that so you don't get to talk to her like that." The video concluded with Tommy apologizing to Katie, followed by Dustin expressing his love for his son and a shared hug, emphasizing an ending rooted in affection and reconciliation.
Katie shared the footage online, expressing gratitude for raising children with "a real man who knows how to be a father," and labeling the discipline as "masculinity." The video quickly amassed over 1.4 million views, igniting a fierce debate among social media users. While some applauded Dustin's method as a form of "tough love" and accountability, others criticized the use of physical activity as a punitive measure.
In an exclusive interview with the Daily Mail, Dustin and Katie defended their actions. Dustin explained that the exercises were not exceptionally difficult for Tommy because the family regularly works out together, making him accustomed to such exertion. He noted Tommy's immediate remorse and emphasized that the moment "ended with love." Dustin believes that the physical exercise helps Tommy to "refocus when he feels that he doesn’t have control over his body and mind which always makes him more reception to healthy communication." Katie added that witnessing this "corrective parenting moment" was particularly meaningful for her, given her own upbringing in a home marked by "toxicity, emotionally reactive parenting, yelling and anger."
Addressing the online backlash, Dustin asserted that parents should be allowed to discipline their children as they "see fit" as long as they are not intentionally causing harm. The couple’s overall goal for their parenting method is to raise Tommy as a "healthy, happy, resilient and respectful human." The divided reactions online underscore the ongoing debate about effective and appropriate disciplinary approaches in modern parenting.
